Toilet flush broke down multiple times throughout our stay, and the maintenance staff was not even always available. Staff was very rude and manager unavailable when we requested a room change, and we had to keep calling and request maintenance ad odd times during the entire stay.
It’s affordable and the location is good especially if you’re traveling with children. Across the river is OMSI and they have an outdoor pool. Breakfast is in the morning though the options are slightly limited for Hot options. They also have a bar and grill that is also affordable and it was tasty. The rooms are a bit dated, could use new carpet but the beds we’re comfortable and clean. Very small elevator so if you have a lot of luggage you may need to take multiple trips.
My advice: stay here with reasonable expectations. It's a 2 star hotel - don't expect luxury. Saying that, the beds were comfy enough, the room average in size (ie: big enough!), the air conditioner worked without being too noisy, the shower was more than adequate, rooms/bathroom were clean. What do people complain about? That the place is dated and showing wear - that is true. But again - what do you expect for 2 stars? It's clean, and....the pool is great, surrounded by tables and chairs that are comfy; plenty of pretty gardens around, too. Staff was a bit on the shy/quiet side, but all were polite and helpful. Note: when we arrived, the pool was closed due to problems with the pump. Being a hot 4th of July weekend, guests were not happy, and I overheard more than one angry complaint to the staff. Front desk staff appeared to handle that stressful (for them) situation with patience and good humor, and despite their pessimism about the chances of the pool opening during the weekend (electricians hard to find!), they succeeded, and we were able to use the pool after all. For under $150, this is a decent place to stay. Just keep those expectations realistic!
The room was quiet and clean. But there was a homeless encampment right on the other side of the fence. There was hardly anything writhin walking distance. The halls and stairwells were shabby. Would not recommend.
This is a regular stop for us when we visit Portland. It’s close to all the downtown shows and other fun things to do and is not too expensive. They have free breakfast and the staff is pretty good despite the fact that they’re still all students in training
The manager was excellent and took extra time and effort to accommodate with another room. The room was great.Couldn’t remember last time we had such a caring manager to take such out of his time .Thank you and we will highly recommend your hotel to all our friends
Every bad experience. They treated me like a criminal when THEY FORGOT TO CHARGE me for second night even though I had the proper paper work and no manager to resolve issue. Dog pissed stained carpet. Dirty sheets stinky BO smell could not use bedding. Room was busted and worn down. Staff speaks poor English and makes mistakes and then blames it on customer. Terrible customer service I will not stay again.
Do not waste your money and emotions. Not worth it. Dingy and dirty. Staff was so so. The bathroom walls were dirty, carpet filthy, had to wear my flip flops in the shower. Found old pair of sunglasses and a jockstrap between mattress and headboard while looking for an outlet. Note to self, Motel 6 is a better option, at least it would have been clean.
This place is a bit old and needs attention but it's not all that bad. The food was pretty good in the restaurant. The pool is really nice too. One really annoying issue was our keys kept needing to be reprogrammed which meant constantly heading back to the lobby. That needs to be fixed.
I had a very nice one week stay here and would happily book University Place again. This is a great location both for the university and downtown, with easy access to Max and bus lines. The price was good, and the area is safe. The hotel has an excellent breakfast included. It's true that the rooms are a bit dated but it didn't bother me. Everything worked, there was a fridge & microwave, and there's a nice TV as well (including HBO). There are a huge number of food options near the hotel. I really liked Verona Pizza and Phat Cart, but there are countless others. The hotel has a beautiful courtyard area, surrounding the pool. It's actually a very attractive setting. The staff was friendly and helped me out when I needed something. Many of the staff are PSU students (so don't expect everyone to have huge amounts of hospitality industry experience).

I do not recommend this hotel at all. The price is not super affordable but it is probably the worst hotel that I have stayed at. The room was dirty, there is a homeless camp right by the other side of their fence and the staff was super unaccommodating. They were recommended to us by OHSU - we had an MRI appointment for our 8 month old son the next day. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY THEY WOULD RECOMMEND THIS PLACE????? We would have found another place to stay if it wasn't just for one night and didn't have to be up early the next morning for our appointment. The homeless camp made us so uncomfortable they are right next to where you park your car. You could smell the marijuana they were smoking, they were cursing and walking around the hotel. Not a good place to stay if you have a family. The rooms speak for themselves as you can see in the photos. The hotel is rundown and needs a lot of work. We will never come back here or EVER recommend this place. We were so glad to leave the next day.
The location is very good and the price are very good for a place in downtown, the rooms are clean but I believe is probably time for a makeover. The breakfast was in the edge between "ok" and bad. It was quite boring, very basic with a "prison cafeteria" feeling.
Due to a family emergency I had to cancel our reservation. I was even willing to take a credit for next years Waterfront festival. With 2 weeks notice , they would not budge. They could easily rent the room to someone else but it will sit empty for a week. Extremely bad business practice. This could have been a glowing review but due to the short sighted management, they get a one. Thanks for making a painful time more painful. Good for you for following the RULES!
Just wanted to reach out and tell how accommodating the front desk staff here was. We were there because wife was having surgery in Portland and I couldn't find the hotel because I wasn't familiar with the city streets there so I called the hotel and was speaking to a gentleman by the name of Billy he was so patient and professional with me I explained I was having trouble finding hotel he guided me from the area I was in right to the front door of hotel. I was so impressed with his understanding I just had to let upper management know what kind and how lucky they are to have him working there.I have been in hotel &casino business for over 30 years and never have I been more impressed with how he bothered to take time and help us get to hotel. And it didn't stop there after we checked in he was treating us the same explaining to me about the hotel amenities on and on. Your whole staff was first class even in restaurant bar . Thanks for making a unpleasant situation a better situation. Rick Janet.
I absolutely love this place. They were so gracious and even made our beds daily. They were so flexible and worked hard when we ended up needing to extend our stay by a day last minute. On the way back, we were going to walk around the city again and they even worked with us to keep our luggage in a safe place until we were done walking. This is a very nice place to stay and they are next door to a dog friendly cafe.
