Took a friend to Thien Hong to experience the food, loved the salt and pepper squid.
New management is way polite than before
The only thing that is good about this place is the salt pepper and squid dish. This is my second time eating at this place and definitely my last. We tipped them through card but as we were about to leave, one of servers chased after us saying if we were going to tip her/them with cash tip. We were confused because we already tipped them through card and asking for more tip is rude. Thai iced tea drink tasted expired. Don’t get rice because it’s an extra $4 charge which we didn’t know because we thought it came with the other dishes we got. Overall, the customer service sucks and you can find better restaurants.
Food was good. But the parking isn't good.
Food is good, service not so much.
Update 2/28/25- Food is still good, typical of Chinese food. The pepper-salted squid (one that they're so popular for) is kind of disappointing this time. It was cold and very chewy, not crispy, used to be nice and plump squid. This time it looks shrunken. Doesn't look fresh. Had the wonton soup which is okay. I ordered Pork ribs in claypot, to-go. This is usually good. I hope so.
Yummy food and good service.Love the salt and pepper squid.
Food is delicious and the service is exceptional.
Be wary of this place. They have intentionally over charged me several times. Always adding extra cost for nothing. If you order 1 or 2 items it would be easy to catch but if you place a larger order, let’s say 3 or more items, the total never adds up. This has happened far too many times; I’ve confronted them on several occasions. My cousin was also ripped off. She tipped with cash, not on her credit card, and these people fraudulently wrote additional tip on the credit card.
Eleven of us arrived just before closing last night. Historically not the best time to visit any restaurant! We were pleasantly and openly greeted by Lori and Vivian. We ordered twelve dishes and each one was delicious! We first started coming to this restaurant 40 years ago and even though they are under new ownership, they have not missed a beat. They do not deserve a 3.8 rating! Keep them a try! You’ll thank me later!

Salt and Pepper squid.
Salt and Pepper Squid is the bomb!
We have been coming to this restaurant regularly since my Chinese/Cambodian husband and I were newly dating 35 years ago. We kept coming after getting married and eventually brought our kids here as well whom the owners watched grow up. Our kids are now in their mid/late 20s and our family still loves this place with great affection. While we miss the former owners, we love the restaurant under the new owners. They are very kind and so attentive, providing excellent service. If possible, the food is even more delicious than before and we are beyond thrilled that the pepper salted squid they are so well known for is just as good! The General Tso’s chicken is even better than before! Their beef chow fun is a favorite and my husband loves the clay pot brisket. Prices are competitive and portions are generous. This place continues to be a family favorite that we will keep coming to. Anna Tang

If you were a fan of SF-17, you will be quite disappointed. Chewy, cold MSG coated blah.
The black bean green beans were crisp and tasty though.

I’ve been coming to Thien hong since I was a kid in the 90s. The previous owner treated us like family. However, there were several times when splitting a bill with friends that we’ve witnessed the previous owner and previous staff chase us as we’re getting to our car making sure we all tipped. With that said, the food has always been great but the service, never so much. Yesterday, I took my family there and it was my time there in 5 years due to Covid and my family moving to another start. I have to say I was impressed. The food was as excellent as always, especially the salt and peppered squid as everyone knows. What impressed me most was the customer service and new ownership. They mentioned the old cooks were retained so food was the same. The new owner and waitresses were all very kind and did not make us feel rushed to pay nor did they hover us as wrote down a tip. Yes, the previous owner and prior staff always breathed down my neck when I left a tip and that was super annoying. Anyways, hopefully my review helps you make a decision to eat here or not. Hands down my favorite Vietnamese / Chinese restaurant in Portland and best squid period.
