Tucked away in the historic Edgefield lodge in Troutdale, Oregon, McMenamins Black Rabbit Restaurant & Bar offers a truly unique dining experience. Upon arriving, I wasn’t entirely sure if I was in the right place—the setting feels like a hidden village, far removed from the hustle of city life. The ambiance outside the restaurant is reminiscent of Disneyland’s New Orleans Square at night, adding to the charm and mystique. Once inside, the Black Rabbit continues to impress with its warm and welcoming atmosphere, almost as if stepping into a different era—a refreshing break from the modern world.

Black Rabbit is known for its innovative Northwest cuisine, blending traditional favorites with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Many ingredients are harvested straight from Edgefield’s own gardens, using organic methods. The restaurant also boasts an extensive selection of regional wines and McMenamins’ own handcrafted ales, brewed onsite. Seasonal courtyard seating adds to the appeal for those who enjoy dining al fresco.

I opted to sit at the bar, where the service was outstanding. The staff was friendly, greeted me quickly, and made me feel welcome right away. For my meal, I ordered the Black Rabbit Burger ($25), which features a ground brisket, sirloin, and chuck beef patty topped with peppercorn bacon, Tillamook white cheddar, tomato, red onion, lettuce, and a grainy mustard aioli on a bun, served with a pickle and a choice of fries or tater tots. I went with the tater tots. To drink, I had the #7 draft pour beer—Lupulin Aftershock: Tropical Voyage (ABV 7.09%, pint $8.25), a Hazy IPA with mango, pineapple, and passion fruit notes.

The tater tots were good, crisp, and well-seasoned. Unfortunately, the burger was pretty disappointing. While it had good flavor, it fell apart rather quickly, making it difficult to eat. I started with my tater tots first, so maybe letting the burger sit for a bit allowed it to soak in juices or something—I’m not sure—but by the time I got to it, the bun had absorbed too much moisture and started to disintegrate before I made it halfway through the meal. While the taste was enjoyable, the structural integrity of the burger left something to be desired.

Overall, McMenamins Black Rabbit Restaurant & Bar is a fascinating spot worth visiting for its atmosphere, excellent service, and creative menu. While I wouldn’t return specifically for the burger, the diverse food and drink offerings, along with the one-of-a-kind ambiance, make it a place worth experiencing. If you find yourself in Troutdale, it’s certainly worth a visit—just maybe for something other than the burger.

Parking: It’s a little confusing when you go to this place for the first time to find parking, I thought I might be in the wrong place at first. Maybe because it was dark.

We waited over 10 minutes for the hostess to return to be seated. Finally seated ourselves in the bar. Food was barely warm, asked for crisp bacon-couldn't pull it off, English muffin was a delightful size but only half toasted and pretty soggy, potatoes non-descript, eggs okay other than I am used to my farm fresh ones with a rich, yellow yolk. Overall a big disappointment. We won't be back.

We arrived at the Black Rabbit Restaurant right on schedule at 1:30 PM. The interior was dimly lit, but we expected that, given the historic ambiance of the surrounding area, which we were excited to experience as part of our visit.

However, upon arrival, the hostess informed us that they were only serving breakfast at that time. While we appreciated her effort to make us aware of other dining options in the area that might cater to a lunch preference, the way it was communicated made us feel unwelcome. Instead of being seated and given the opportunity to view the menu ourselves, it felt as though we were being directed elsewhere before we even had a chance to settle in and decide.

We eventually ended up in a different room that offered local beers and a single menu option consisting of typical American fare, mainly burgers and beer. While that may appeal to some, it wasn’t what we were hoping for during our visit to a restaurant we had been excited to try.

Unfortunately, this experience fell short of our expectations. We left disappointed, feeling like we may have visited the wrong location or branch of McMenamins. While we won’t return to this particular restaurant, we’re still open to trying another McMenamins location in the future to see if the experience and service are better elsewhere.

Restaurant in McNamen's Edgefield, Vancouver 🍽️

The interior of the store has a mature atmosphere with dimmed lighting.
Feel the history in light bulbs and decorations

wide table seat
A dignified store

Draft beer and cheeseburger
fries on the side
Nano potatoes are crispy and freshly fried
Chewy mashed potatoes inside

A meaty hamburger
Make draft beer even more delicious

It was a great meal

What can I say about the tater tots? They were absolutely fire. Very delicious. Unfortunately, the Aztec salad and pizza we got were quite average. In fact, I would call them quite forgettable. On top of that, they were wildly overpriced at 19 bucks for the salad at 24 for the pizza. But they weren't bad by any means. As a visitor to the area, I would also have to give props to the atmosphere and overall experience. It's wild how the restaurant is on the same piece of land as a distillery, hotel, par-3 course, and glass blowing studio, to name a few things. Anyways, the tater tots are the only worthwhile thing there.

We just got back from this place and we will never go back. Our reservations where at 6:30.. was not busy at all. The food was horrible...my sons pasta was cold..my husbands burger was requested medium rare..it was well done. Our friends salad was brought out a totally differrent salad and the other salad was so small. We spent $200 for all of this which is mine blowing!!. Literally wasted time and money. It took us 2 hours to get food and drinks. Horrible.

So.... We have been to Black Rabbit twice in the past month, first on Thanksgiving and then tonight: Christmas. The atmosphere is generally pleasant. It's a dimly lit restaurant that evokes old time fine dining. Both times we were seated fairly quickly, although we DID have reservations.

On Thanksgiving, our server was attentive and speedy, while being friendly. She stopped by several times making sure we didn't need anything and even made small talk, even though they were very busy. On Christmas, they weren't as busy, but our experience was completely different. One woman came and took our drink order, and delivered half of it a few minutes later. Then our regular waiter came and took our order. After he left, I realized we still didn't have water or my wife's drink. I flagged him down a few minutes later to ask about it and he promptly brought it to her, commenting that it was just sitting at the bar. Her drink was room temperature, (it was supposed to be cold) and if I had seen our waiter again, I would have complained. After almost exactly one hour he did return to tell us the kitchen was "backed up" and offered a complimentary drink, which we took. Our food finally came about fifteen minutes later.

For Thanksgiving, the food was decent, but nothing exceptional. We both had the traditional turkey dinners. The turkey was really good, the side dishes were all right, and the rolls were hard and dry. Overall not bad, but honestly I could do better at jome. For Christmas, my wife was going to get the prime rib, but we were informed that they were out, so she ordered the burger. I got the ham dinner. Her burger was decent, but the bun was stale and the salad was limp. All of my side dishes were really tasty, but the ham was dry and very fatty. By the time we were done eating and the waiter showed up again, we had been seated for over two hours, so we declined any dessert and just left.

I get that we were there on holidays, but even taking that into account, it just was substandard overall. Next year we will dine elsewhere.

McMenamins are usually pretty mediocre with the food and this was actually better than usual. We made a reservation and showed up late and were graciously seated. The menu is accessible and normal, nothing super special. The salmon chowder was so delicious! The tater tots are tasty, the eggs benedict was really good. The only thing that was terrible was the avocado toast, how!?! NO seasoning, the bread wasn't warm or toasted, the salad green weren't dressed. It honestly made us laugh but hey, the rest was good and better than mediocre so can't complain.

First time here. The server was very nice; however, the food took a really long time to come out and was unimpressive. Expensive and while the halibut was a good sized portion and very well cooked the sides were ridiculously non existent. Not somewhere I would consider visiting again.

My chicken was overcooked and dry. It took a really long time to come out. I really like mcmenamins typically but this was just overpriced hard chicken. They definitely can do better. The beer was good as always.

It takes a lot for me to walk out of a restaurant before my food comes but congrats to Black Rabbit for delivering that tonight. Had reservations, waited a half hour to even make an order, and after an hour of waiting for a salad and a mezza plate, watched tables around us who were seated after us get their food while our waiter kept saying he'd check on it. When we were able to grab his attention, and he didn't seem to care, we said we were going to have to leave but of course he told us not without paying for our $6 mocktails. Seriously? Wow.
