We were staying at the Family Inn on a Monday when their restaurant is closed, so we walked over to the bakery for breakfast. It was extremely busy with few places to sit while waiting for our order. More seating was available upstairs, but due to my mobility issues, it would be difficult for me to manage the stairs carrying a tray. As a result, we opted for take out & enjoyed our breakfast back at the inn. Everything was good & we went back the following day to buy cookies. My only complaint is that there is not more seating downstairs.
The food was delicious. We had the Cuban and BLT with apple butter. Will make a point of eating there again when we are in town.
Been coming to the Bird In Hand Bakery And Cafe for many years and have always been very satisfied. I do believe they have the best Shoofly Pie in the area. The pie is always moist and extremely flavorful and stays for a number of days without refrigeration. The Whoopi Pies are also a real treat. Breads, doughnuts, buns and specialty occasions cakes are all wonderful. A must stop when in Amish Country. The only problem is living down the road from here. Not good the the waistline.
We meant to go to the other bake shop but accidentally put this one into the gps instead. We had looked up the website for the other bakery and saw the options so when we walked in and only saw a couple of Whoopi pies and a couple of shoofly pies we were super disappointed. It was only around 2pm when we got there so it’s not even that it was super late. The cafe part looked packed (as was the whole store) but also completely picked over. Not sure if it was sold out or if there wasn’t a lot to begin with. We didn’t actually end up trying anything from this one once we figured out this wasn’t the same bakery (just similar names), however, with the options they had I’d say skip this one all together and go to the other one which has tons of more options and seems more authentic.
I cannot tell you enough how much of a must stop this bakery and café is while you're in the area!!! I will definitely say, the earlier in the day you get there, the better chance you have at finding an array of items on the bakery side, but even if you get there later in the morning or the afternoon, there's still plenty to choose from. Also, it get busy and the staff does an excellent job at serving customers, so please be patient with them. When I was just there, I witnessed a woman go to the staff on the other side of the bakery and demand they get her items as she wasn't one to stand in a line. She then got irate when the staff said they were for their side of the bakery only and had to wait on those customers. Their ice cream is so delicious as well!

This review is for the baked items only. We had had a lovely breakfast at the Inn where we were staying so stopped in for a mid-morning snack. Wanted to try the whoopie pie and the Shoefly pie. We bought a pumpkin whoopie pie and it was heavy in the hand so we expected it to be a heavy dessert, we couldn't have been more wrong. The pumpkin cookies were soft and flavorful and the filling surprisingly light and not too sweet. The shoefly pie was a different story, we bought a miniature one for the two of us to share. Mr. B took one bite and said the rest is yours. I took a bite and eh, it wasn't terrible, it was okay, but pretty dry and not a lot of flavor. It was disappointing. The bakery was listed in a book I have titled Food Journey's of a Lifetime, and based on the book, reviews and word of mouth from others who highly recommended the bakery, we weren't that impressed. It was crowded and parking can definitely be a problem, felt more like a tourist destination than a cool little local bakery.
Just got this one day ago and it has mold on it!?
We stopped by for a lite breakfast. And were not disappointed. The moment you walk in the smells and aromas hit you . Everything looked so good. Try this place.
We bought a large shoofly pie, mini whoopie pies, and sourdough bread which were all very good. The shoofly pie was especially tasty! The crumbly crust and thick, creamy molasses filling made this a delicious treat! Nice, friendly help in the bakery, also!
The staff was very nice and attentive. The place was clean and had a variety of different dessert and food.
