This was my first time visiting black hen I was looking forward to me and my family but I have to say the food wasn't what i expected I got 4 piece chicken along with Brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes which the mashed potatoes was really great!!! The fried chicken and Brussels sprouts was overally cooked and seasoned which I was very disappointed!!!! Besides that the staff was very nice my waitress hunter was very sweet and understanding and very patient with me and and my family I would love to come back and give it another shot :)

Traveling to Philadelphia, I wanted to support a black-owned business. I found BlackHen like most people (through social media of course). The name and the bold decor caught my eye. So creative! I made reservations on Open table (as it's a smaller venue) HIGHLIGHTS: Bri was our waitress , she was very polite and kind. I ordered the 4 wings, with collard greens and candied Yams. I also ordered a Mac and cheese. Oh my goodness... the food was all that. I thought I was in the South. Everything came out hot 🔥. It was crazy delicious. Chicken was fried just right and seasoned so well. My taste buds waa trying to figure it out! Greens were just right not too vinegar and not too sweet. They also had a "kick' to it. Candied Yams could really be the dessert. It was good. The Mac and cheese was.on point. ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT: The meal didnt come with bread or cornbread (I didn't realize it till I was finished) Music- I thought i saw somewhere, that R&B music waa played. Rap (with explicit language) was the only thing in rotation. My daughter is 15 and she commented to me about the music since there waa a family there with two minor kids Please dont look at this as a negative review. Whenever. I'm in Philly. I WILL visit again. The branding caught my eye, but its the food that will have me return.

Wasn't the best to be so pricey . Very small & the people next to us was so loud we couldn't even get comfortable .

BlackHen was a pleasant surprise. We went in with mild expectations but was shocked with how fresh, delicious, and tasty the food was. The restaurant was small but intimate. You get a good amount of food for the prices. Will be back.

The full fried chicken was very good - nice buttermilk marinade with a good slightly sweet but salty breading. The chicken was smaller but cakes with 4 sides. The Brussels sprouts are good but the sauce with them, which was really good, needed to be tossed in the sauce for better coverage. The skillet Mac-n-cheese was a little dry as were the chicken strips. The noise was really bad due to the music with the speaker overhead that made talking very challenging. The service was also very slow. It took about 45 minutes to get our food served and had to ask for some of the items that were forgotten. Overall, excellent chicken with a south flavor hat is a little sweet, but hit or miss on the other food.

This is our third time at Black Hen and each time has been wonderful. From the nice greetings at the door, excellent customer service, and outstanding food (hot and didn't take long to come out) it's now our go to eatery for our date nights. Thanks so much to Armani (our server for the second time) for the delicious suggestions and bubble personality. We will definitely be back again

I am familiar with the owner and this restaurant did not disappoint. Excellent food and even though it was Mother's day I was seated within 6 mins of my reservation. Awesome! Excellent. Delicious.

The food here is really good. I had fried chicken wings. They were literally the best wings I've had in a long time. They came out so hot. My group enjoyed their food. We had a lot of stuff and everyone said everything was really good. The only thing someone in my group was disappointed with was the buffalo dip.. they wanted more. Definitely will be going back.
The beignets are AMAZING!!
It's a little small but it works.

I struggled whether to give 4 or 5 stars and while I enjoyed the food, I'll likely not return. So 4 stars it is.

What they did well:
Greeted and seated right away. Friendly service. The server knew details about dishes and made recommendations. Mac was good. Not greasy yet cheesy. Chicken cheese steak beignets were delicious. Smoked wings and fried wings had good flavor. Greens were great. The cornbread was moist. Yams were not too mushy nor too sweet. The sparkling water was delicious.

What could be improved:
Prices were high for the portion sizes.
Please find a different wing supplier. The size of the wings were borderline disrespectful. I asked for cornbread as one of my sides and the piece was barely 2"x2".
Spice - flavors were good but a bit more spiciness could have gone a long way in several dishes. Even the sauce that was 'sweet and spicy' was very sweet.
Some foods were piping hot while others were just warm.
I didn't like that the sides were on separate plates. The tables aren't big enough for that.
I wish there was more meat in the greens.

Vegetarian options: I saw at least 1 vegetarian option (a sandwich).

Looking to try something different, but also familiar I stopped in at Black Hen. I heard about the restaurant from my mom. She follows their instagram @blackhenphilly.

I was seated immediately and asked what I wanted to drink. I asked for a moment with the menu before deciding on black cherry soda. My server Shay brought me a glass bottle and removed the cap. She asked what I would like and I went to my phone. I wanted something familiar, but also new. I ordered chicken cheesesteak beignets and candied yams.

The soda and yams were sweet as expected, but I had never had beignets before. As I sliced into 1, I was unsure about my decision. However, that feeling was short-lived as the explosive flavor of a Philly cheesesteak attacked my tastebuds. Had no idea how something that small could be so flavorful. I gobbled down the 3 morsels without a second thought.

Chicken Cheesesteak Beignets 5 ⭐️
Candied Yams 5 ⭐️
Black Cherry Soda 5 ⭐️

I was unsure going in, but Black Hen is definitely a spot to check out if you are looking for down South cooking with a twist and a twist on Philly cuisine. I will be back next time I'm in the city.

The ONLY downside is that you can’t tell it’s a restaurant from the street. Fantastic food and even better service!

I am so glad that I made it here!
First off this place is small! Do not be deceived, the dinning area is small, I would STRONGLY suggest that you make reservations if you are a large group and for here a group over 4 could be considered large!
Now, the food is absolutely amazing! They do Not miss with anything! Everything we had was so Good!
The Yams were sweet, the greens were just right, the Mac and Cheese had so much cheese ! The sides come in a separate small plate, so you get a lot of food! And the cornbread! ?? they have this dark blue or black butter/syrup for the Cornbread!!! OMG! it's weird because it turns the cornbread black! But don't let the looks deceive you because it is amazing!
The Chicken!!!!! It hot, good and they have the Best sauces to put on it!
Again, Go, try it out, you won't be disappointed

Im disappointed in a Black place that does not get fried chicken right. Very. The chicken seemed like it was seasoned after it was fried... and with some kind of sweet seasoning salt...very odd. I just could not believe that this is the case. Like who approved this? it was very confusing and I am disappointed in my Black chefs here. I would not return unless they got it right. Food is a no. But the staff was nice enough.
