The food here is really good. I had fried chicken wings. They were literally the best wings I've had in a long time. They came out so hot. My group enjoyed their food. We had a lot of stuff and everyone said everything was really good. The only thing someone in my group was disappointed with was the buffalo dip.. they wanted more. Definitely will be going back.
The beignets are AMAZING!!
It's a little small but it works.

I struggled whether to give 4 or 5 stars and while I enjoyed the food, I'll likely not return. So 4 stars it is.

What they did well:
Greeted and seated right away. Friendly service. The server knew details about dishes and made recommendations. Mac was good. Not greasy yet cheesy. Chicken cheese steak beignets were delicious. Smoked wings and fried wings had good flavor. Greens were great. The cornbread was moist. Yams were not too mushy nor too sweet. The sparkling water was delicious.

What could be improved:
Prices were high for the portion sizes.
Please find a different wing supplier. The size of the wings were borderline disrespectful. I asked for cornbread as one of my sides and the piece was barely 2"x2".
Spice - flavors were good but a bit more spiciness could have gone a long way in several dishes. Even the sauce that was 'sweet and spicy' was very sweet.
Some foods were piping hot while others were just warm.
I didn't like that the sides were on separate plates. The tables aren't big enough for that.
I wish there was more meat in the greens.

Vegetarian options: I saw at least 1 vegetarian option (a sandwich).

Looking to try something different, but also familiar I stopped in at Black Hen. I heard about the restaurant from my mom. She follows their instagram @blackhenphilly.

I was seated immediately and asked what I wanted to drink. I asked for a moment with the menu before deciding on black cherry soda. My server Shay brought me a glass bottle and removed the cap. She asked what I would like and I went to my phone. I wanted something familiar, but also new. I ordered chicken cheesesteak beignets and candied yams.

The soda and yams were sweet as expected, but I had never had beignets before. As I sliced into 1, I was unsure about my decision. However, that feeling was short-lived as the explosive flavor of a Philly cheesesteak attacked my tastebuds. Had no idea how something that small could be so flavorful. I gobbled down the 3 morsels without a second thought.

I was unsure going in, but Black Hen is definitely a spot to check out if you are looking for down South cooking with a twist and a twist on Philly cuisine. I will be back next time I'm in the city.

The ONLY downside is that you can’t tell it’s a restaurant from the street. Fantastic food and even better service!

I am so glad that I made it here!
First off this place is small! Do not be deceived, the dinning area is small, I would STRONGLY suggest that you make reservations if you are a large group and for here a group over 4 could be considered large!
Now, the food is absolutely amazing! They do Not miss with anything! Everything we had was so Good!
The Yams were sweet, the greens were just right, the Mac and Cheese had so much cheese ! The sides come in a separate small plate, so you get a lot of food! And the cornbread! ?? they have this dark blue or black butter/syrup for the Cornbread!!! OMG! it's weird because it turns the cornbread black! But don't let the looks deceive you because it is amazing!
The Chicken!!!!! It hot, good and they have the Best sauces to put on it!
Again, Go, try it out, you won't be disappointed

Im disappointed in a Black place that does not get fried chicken right. Very. The chicken seemed like it was seasoned after it was fried... and with some kind of sweet seasoning salt...very odd. I just could not believe that this is the case. Like who approved this? it was very confusing and I am disappointed in my Black chefs here. I would not return unless they got it right. Food is a no. But the staff was nice enough.

As someone who has lived most of their life in the deep south, I can honestly say that the fried chicken and the sides at the Black Hen are SPOT ON! I have eaten fried chicken at dozens of restaurants across Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee. The fried chicken at the Black Hen is as good or better than any I've ever had. If you like southern food, do yourself a favor and try the Black Hen. While you are at it... try the cornbread with black vanilla butter syrup! Oh my goodness, it melts in your mouth!

OMG! This place is amazing, my new favorite fried chicken restaurant, the macaroni & cheese, the collard greens are “chef kiss”. I am told the black & white cornbread are amazing as well. I am going to try next time! Parking is Philly typical, if you know what I mean.

I recently had the chance to dine at The Black Hen, and it completely exceeded my expectations—definitely a 10/10 experience. From the friendly staff to the cleanliness of the restaurant, everything was top-notch. I ordered the chicken tenders, mac and cheese, and yams, and each dish was cooked and seasoned to perfection! I had read a different review mentioning that the chicken lacked seasoning, but the chicken I had was flavorful and cooked to perfection. Whoever was in the kitchen really outdid themselves tonight. I also tried the peach cobbler, which was delicious as well.

I took my sister here for her birthday for an early dinner and it did not disappoint. We got a little bit of everything. My sister‘s favorite was the cheesesteak beignets everything was amazing.
The service was excellent. Our server was very attentive. The atmosphere was very warm and cozy. It was a great experience..

Vegetarian options: Plenty of vegetarian options as far as decides the sweet potatoes, mac & cheese, cornbread dressing, the cornbread itself, string beans collard greens etc

Parking: There’s a parking lot across the street. There’s also paid parking spaces and there’s parking on the street if you can find it.

Don’t let the pictures fool you. The food was not good at all! I got the popcorn chicken and it didn’t taste like popcorn chicken AT ALL! It was cooked poorly and then the popcorn they had in it/around it was stale! And it taste like it’s been sitting in a plastic bucket that they got from the grocery store and they just dig it out and throw it on there! The macaroni and cheese was nasty, wasn’t hot or baked fully and taste like a bunch of block cheese. And don’t get me started on the fried chicken which isn’t even how you fry chicken btw! It was wet/a little slimy in the inside with some brown sugar crust on the outside. HORRIBLE! The service was OK but they just all looked miserable and the place is really small. Seating area was tight with barely any space. The only somewhat “Good” part about my experience was what the popcorn chicken came out in. It was a traditional mini popcorn machine. Very picture worthy and creative. It looked decent but taste didn’t match how it looked. So if you wanna come for some bad/ok tasting food, sitting in a tight small place with servers that look upset but you can get a nice picture of that one thing then go for it! Lol You’ve been warned!

I had an amazing experience at Black Hen. The food was delicious, from the appetizers to entrees to dessert, nothing disappointed. I highly recommend the deviled eggs, the fried chicken was seasoned and fried to perfection with great sauce to compliment and the peach cobbler hand pies were the perfect ending. The restaurant is small but has a great vibe. The servers were friendly, timely and helpful with recommendations. but the star of the show for me was the great music. It was a great evening at Black Hen.
