Wonderful sushi that is not only above and beyond 95% of what this city offers but probably the best priced for the quality in this entire region.
The spicy tuna for example is Bluefin that the owner sources aggressively himself and cuts from the entire H&G fish. It's exceptional in both fat content and color and comes from the scrape of the fresh tuna carcass in the back of the restaurant....not the treated, processed and frozen ground tuna most places are serving as if it's acceptable.
That's just one example; I have yet to find a thing on this menu that isn't a surprisingly above expectation experience.

This is a food gem in an unexpected corner of Philadelphia. Both the ramen and sushi are exceptional!! The broth flavor is deep, complex with rich umami notes, the veggie ramen being the favorite (surprisingly!). The service is also outstanding. I have eaten here dozens of times with my family (ranging between ages 9 and 50) and while we all have such different preferences and tastes, we all 100% agree this place is consistently delicious.

The atmosphere is nice - the location is at front and Girard, then you are a world away in the sprawling Japanese restaurant. And, the hospitality is unmatched. We accidentally made a reservation on a day they aren’t usually opened and they honored it. That being said, I don’t think you’d need a reservation. They really made our visit special, we so appreciate it.

I’ve enjoyed every meal I have ever had at Dawa and prefer it over any other sushi in Philly. My boyfriend and I also did the omakase and it was so delicious and fun. Joseph is very friendly and made us sooo much food and a fun dessert. He even snuck my bf an extra handroll after I said I would die if I ate anymore to make sure he wasn’t still hungry. I highly recommend it! If you enjoy the family run atmosphere and sushi at Sagami I think you will feel right at home at Dawa as well!
