We had a great experience at Heavy Metal Sausage. The cheese plate and pulled pork entrees were fabulous. The owner was a really friendly guy. He recommended two types of sausages that were seasonal that were wonderful on the grill!
This place is the best. The food is the best and the people are the best.
Loved it! Interesting and high-quality meat board. Clockwise from bottom left: a buttery, spreadable chicken liver paté with a hint of cognac (?); a firm and gelatinous head cheese; a rustic country paté; a surprisingly mild blood and tongue baloney; and an incredible duck ham that came across as a slightly gamier cousin of pork ham. The accoutrements were no afterthought: pickles, horseradish, pepper relish, cherry preserves, and bread made using house-milled flour with a nutty aroma, all made in-house. I asked if I could buy a smaller portion and they accommodated. Worth a 20-minute detour if you’re in the area. I look forward to dining here again.
Excellent deli meats and dinner.
Delighted to have been able to join them for dinner, enjoyable food, drinks and service!
Best sausages with unique and high quality ingredients! Cured meats and farm fresh raw meat and eggs
Excellent experience! We enjoyed a great Beef Tartare & the 6 spice brisket. Great atmosphere and great staff.
West of Broad. Best of Philly.
This place is as advertised. The Italian was made with a fresh baked wheat bread and in-house cured meats.
Good meat, although the pate was a bit tough

HMS would be a dangerously expensive shop for us if we lived in the area. Had the Italian and the Zungenblutwurst sandwich and took some brats, mortadella, duck pate, and some headcheese home. Everything was amazing. Incredibly sweet folks. Bistro tasting is at the top of our list for our return. Cannot recommend a place more.
Interesting charcuterie. Monthly multicourse dinners offered.
Excellent for sausage or meat, and excellent for dinner!
We had dinner at the trattoria, and it was a November highlight. We were originally supposed to come a few weeks ago, but I messed up my schedule and Mel was really accommodating to get us scheduled for a different night (and she also responded to my email in minutes–not at all expected, but very appreciated). So, great service even before we walked in the door.
The meal was really something else, not food that you'll get at most other places in Philly. My boyfriend and I are both Midwestern corn-fed boys, and this is the kind of intensely rich and heavy food that was a staple growing up. It was by far the richest meal we've had with Philly, and it walked right up to the line of being overwhelming without crossing it.
As for vibes, absolutely perfect. The playlist was an outstanding tour of the 2000s and 2010s. The atmosphere feels like you're in someone's home. A lot of restaurants like to claim that, but trattoria actually pulls it off. Two of the tables are literally in the kitchen. Whether you want it or not, you're getting dinner and a show.
I also really like the prepay format. It hasn't caught on in Philly that much, but it has become more accepted in other cities. It feels really good to just sit and have a great meal, and walk out when you're good and ready without fussing with a bill. It really adds to the 'eating at a friends' vibe.
Picked up the breakfast sausage today at the farmers market. Made a breakfast sandwich- was amazing!
