Sao is a tiny but mighty restaurant serving funky sweet sour salty spicy Southeast Asian cuisine, with a focus on seafood. Reservations are very difficult to come by, though walk-ins may snag a seat at the bar. The atmosphere is dark, romantic, and quite cozy.
The food is amazing and incredible, with insane flavor. The menu features fabulous crudos that melt in your mouth, like the scallop crudo. Must-order dishes include the papaya salad, the perfect soft shell shrimp, and the amazing hoe cake, which is like a hot buttery, sweet cornbread. The seafood Mee Caton is a standout special, reminiscent of Chinese flavors, and the beef Mee Catan is also ridiculous. Other notable dishes are the whole dorade, scallops with crab gravy, oysters, and a chicken skewer special. Desserts, like the pumpkin spice woopy pie, are executed very well and not too sweet.
Service is super accommodating, amazing, friendly, and knowledgeable. The overall experience is fantastic and incredible, often considered better than its sibling restaurant Mawn. Whether with a coveted reservation or as a walk-in, guests will be in very good hands for an unforgettable meal.
