All the foods were really delicious
I loved the spicy tuna rice cracker the rice was really crispy and it was really fresh!
Overall all the small plates were good.
The steak sauces were really good, both the wagyu and porter steak were cooked well, the porter steak was served at the table, adding the sauce and slicing it which was fun.
Overall we enjoyed the food a lot and recommend this place.
The prices are also really good particularly the quality of the food was really good.

Transferred to Japan.
Absolutely outstanding.
Authentic fine sushi.

Edit on April 24th:
Editing because I came back to try the omakase and I am so glad I did. I want it every day now!

Super well priced for the quality offers: toro, uni, caviar, foie gras, black truffle…

Amazing food for restaurant week! I got the himachi tataki, A5 Wagyu ramen which was phenomenal and the ginger crème brûlée for dessert 😋

Incredible experience overall!! We opted for omekase and Alex insisted we move to the bar for the "full experience." So glad we did and Chef Kenny did not disappoint. With the impending storm, we had the place to ourselves so it was quiet and cozy. It was wonderful because we learned about each piece presented and truly enjoyed the conversations with Alex and Kenny. Their attention to detail was impeccable and they were genuinely great guys! And the black sesame mocha ice cream with tempura crunch was a delightful ending! We will definitely go back!

Took my husband here for his birthday. We were very excited about getting out and enjoying a good meal. Too many things went the wrong way . . * we were seated at a tiny table next to air vent blowing cold air even though there were other tables available * we had to ask to be moved to a different table * once moved the person that originally sat us had an attitude with us all evening * we rec'd our appetizer and main entree, then waited over 30 mins for dessert and our check (I kept having to add time to our meter - that's how i know how long we waited) * we never rec'd our dessert, but a positive note - they deducted it from our restaurant week total, but it made for a VERY disappointing experience for what was suppose to be special night celebrating my husband

The food was mediocre and overpriced for the quality, but the service is what really ruined the experience.

We were a party of two and politely asked to sit in the dining room. The server repeatedly tried to push us to sit at the bar instead. When we were finally directed to a table, it was a very small one, and we were told that if we wanted to sit at a larger table or booth, we would need to order “a lot of food.”

This was especially frustrating because there were already three other parties of two seated in the dining room at booths or larger tables, and none of them appeared to be required to order extra food to sit there. The inconsistency felt unfair and unwelcoming.

Overall, the food didn’t justify the price, and the poor, dismissive service made it an experience I wouldn’t return for.

The food here is really really good. This is by far the best sushi we've found in Philly. We ordered several things ala carte, and everything was super delicious. Nice atmosphere. We will be back!

We had a wonderful meal at Umami. Everything was delicious, from our appetizers (rock shrimp tempura, pork gyoza, octopus, and Umami salad) to our main dishes (porterhouse steak and rib lamb chops). The service was friendly and attentive, and it was a pleasure being there. Umami really stands out in the restaurant scene around Washington Square and deserves a higher profile!

Umami is absolutely delicious!! The food was fresh and tasted amazing. We had sushi rolls of Philadelphia, California, Shrimp Tempura and Spicy Tuna. We also ordered the porterhouse…wow!!!!!! So good. This place is definitely worth checking out.

Umami has now become my standard for what a great sushi restaurant should be. We had had early reservations for 4 on a Friday, but we really wouldn't have needed them this early. But it started picking up by the time we left. By luck, the manager, Alex, was also our waiter as we had arrived 5 minutes before opening. He was wonderful and very informative.
The fish was fresh, abundant and varied. I had ordered the Chef's chirashi (see pic). There was so much fish, I could not find the rice. I had also ordered two pieces of sashimi that I can't get at most places - hotate (scallop) and ebi (raw shrimp). Surprisingly, the chirashi also contained each of these! My wife and son had fantastic rolls the were packed with fish. We started with appetizers (calamari, pork gyoza, and edamame) that were delicious as well. There is full bar service, but only one draft selection (Sapporo). I opted for a Hitochino White ale that was similar to Alligash (also available.)
SIL had the ginger ice cream creme brulee. Oishii!
While we didn't do steak, there were many in the restaurant that had table-side prep of various steak cuts. A Wagyu A5 is also available.
Our next visit will be for the Omakase that Alex said had 18 offerings from the chef. Can't wait.
While they have been open for 3 years, I predict that they will be a culinary fixture for many years.

The waiter has no knowledge of Japanese tea. We were asking some hot Japanese tea after the dinner and were told that matcha is the only available Japanese tea. However, what we actually got was mugicha.

I love the sushi here. This is my third time at the restaurant and honestly the first 2 times were not very memorable but this visit changed it. Their sashimi was so fresh and honestly better some of the omakase I've had in Philly. All staff were so friendly too. Highly recommend and will definitely come back

Second time here and will be back again. Ask for the surf and turf roll and you will not be disappointed.
