“Social sensitivity
“I’ll have Swiss cheese, but I’m allergic to the third hole.”
My father was always fond of flat jokes. He thinks of a play on words, a comical comment, he says it out loud, without restraint, with a goofy smile plastered on his face, inevitably satisfied with his move.
“Bouchard is “popcorn” in Lebanese.”
Sometimes he adds more to prolong his pleasure.
“My students called me “Mr. Popcorn””
And I, on my side, thinking in my heart:
" Misery… "
But it was not always like this. When I was a teenager, I in no way formalized my father's humorous attempts (and this, paradoxically, knowing how sensitive teenagers can be). I didn't tense up thinking about what these listeners might think of him (or me). I was more carefree, in a way. Is this better than being (too) socially sensitive?
As I walked through the door of Falafel Freiha, I warmly greeted the lady behind the counter, but I didn't get the same cordiality in return. No smile, no hello, no movement of the head at most. From then on, I began to worry that my father, who rarely goes out to restaurants so often, was going to be put off by the service (and by extension, the meal), already that he had criticized the front of the place, finding it to be old, ugly , pitiful, I no longer remember it exactly. My pleasure from an outing is intimately linked to that of the other, so a threat to the pleasure of the latter is a threat to mine as well. There is almost nothing worse for my mood than a negative mind. Am I doing right to give so much weight to the opinions and perceptions of my companions?
However, my father does not have a delicate palate and he is easily satisfied with everything with almost the same enthusiasm. Never, ever, have I seen him swoon after taking a bite of something, or lament about a dish being too much this, too much that, not enough this, not enough that. No, because the main goal is to spend time with me, not to have a special culinary experience. So, what makes it through his esophagus is secondary, but telling me how he captured and “squawked” squirrels is the main thing.
“I want to show you some pictures of the squirrels I have…”
“No, no, Dad, please. We're going to eat there! »
In the end, the meal went very well and my apprehensions were in vain. First, the owners were friendly and happy to have us at their table since the majority of customers were ordering to go. The lady, with two curlers in her hair, came to have a chat with us (“I was once the queen of Lebanon, did you know that?”), gracing us with multiple smiles.
Secondly, the falafels did not disappoint! Fried, with a crispy crust and filled with tender goodness, we greedily topped our pita breads with a generous layer of their homemade taratour sauce, tomatoes, etc. A few newspaper articles (The Gazette) and notebooks hung proudly on the walls and served as decoration in an otherwise bare room. “The best falafels in Quebec are in Laval,” the Tastet article bluntly declares. It's up to you to judge, but with the best falafels in Quebec, I might have expected to be "knocked over", feet above my head, but that didn't happen.
What I can guarantee you, however, is that, like the hungry customers who were lining up before the restaurant even opened, you will be treated to a unique experience. Suggestion: sit down with two or three people and get to know the owners (who turn out to be endearing after a little warming up!)
Price for two people: $26 (a dozen falafels with side dish and pita bread).
P.S.
It was for my father's birthday. Happy birthday, dad! I love you.
Vegetarian options: They only sell falafel so...
Parking: The parking lot is extremely narrow. A young lady“

“The falafel sandwich is absolutely delicious. As it is cooked in front of you (and not reheated), everything is very fresh, hot and tasty. The result is much superior to what we are served elsewhere. The shik taouk is also very, very good.
This restaurant is very clean and well maintained and the service is impeccable.
Without reservation, I highly recommend it.
Vegetarian options: Falafel is a vegetarian dish.“

“I got the Falafel pita it was really good. You'll need at least 2 since one isn't enough. It's not as good as falafel St Jacque but probably the best in WI.“

“After going twice so far, I would keep this spot on my weekly going to places for delicious food. They have a big variety of Lebanese style sandwiches and burgers. Prices are convenient and slightly cheaper than similar restaurants. (Don’t forget to ask for an extra small cup of garlic ?)“

“Some of the best falafel I have had. I recommend getting something with salad because they had a lot of options, and you could choose two with the sandwich. The tabouli was very fresh, and the quinoa salad was nice.
For meat the Jerusalem mix was good too, and the fries were crispy. I recommend the tahini and spicy sauce, which wasnt very spicy anyways.
The staff were kind and helpful, love the guy who did some fancy spins as he wrapped up our sandwiches.
Vegetarian options: Excellent falafel, tons of awesome salads, great for vegans and vegetarians“

“Today I finally ordered the lamb shoulder wrap and was so excited to eat it. After finishing the first half (which was delicious) I did notice it was a little dry. I then noticed that I had accidentally removed all my toppings and sauces and added extra pickles - this was the opposite of what I was intending to do…Despite thinking I’d indulge in a flavourful wrap, it was still a 10/10 ? well done guys!“
