Hidden, yet easy to find, creative, cocktails, and careful service in a dim and tasteful setting.

Intimate speakeasy conveniently located in the downtown core. The bartender will ask what your drink preferences are and each cocktail is custom to order. We waited over an hour to be seated on a Saturday night but it was well worth the wait!

Excellent service, friendly, courteous and great ambiance. Music is not too loud, the place ranks ex aequo with any New York speakeasy. The Sazerac is mixed to perfection and the advice is professional. The place is in a league of its own!

We slid in at the perfect time, around 6:00. After that it filled up quickly! We both had delicious, nameless cocktails that we got to really communicate a few things we enjoyed and make our order into a bit more of a conversation than a bark. We had a delicious little welcome palette cleanser drink that was grapefruit and beautiful. I love this place so much and would absolutely recommend!!

This is a speakeasy style back room bar at the Maison Cloakroom along Rue de la Montagne. They can cater to around 22 people at a time so come early if you've more than 2 people or be prepared to wait for space if visiting during later hours of the evening. Opening hours are 4pm until late.

Bar environs are classy and staff extremely helpful with drink order suggestions. There is no drink menu. Simple give the waiter an idea of what spirit, flavours and drink concepts you like and they will prepare something for you behind the bar.

I tried a rye based Old Fashioned and Manhattan, both of which were well mixed, strong and very good. Others in our party enjoyed Pisco sour, gin based cocktails with cucumber and fruity characteristics which they enjoyed as well. We had a really good time at Cloakroom Bar and would gladly return for another round during future trips to Montreal.

I wish we could make reservation ahead of time so we don’t have to wait in line for 45 min but it was worth it .

I did not expect to be literally shoved in a cloakroom because the incredibly small place was crowded and they still let me in instead of just letting me know, especially that I asked to be seated at the bar. The cherry on the cake was an unexpected $30 bill for a cocktail I barely sipped because they don’t provide any prices nor menus. I get the latter but customers should get to choose what price they are willing to pay. The drink was absolutely not to my taste and I barely took a tasting sip. They did not hesitate to charge me the full amount instead of offering a replacement to my “celery” cocktail!! The host was cold and arrogant, and the ambiance was a mood killer. Bartenders were not even giving you eye contact. My worst bar experience ever. I felt scammed!

As a Torontonian who’s always celebrated Canada’s diversity, I never thought I’d be writing a review like this, but my recent visit to Cloakroom Bar was the first time I’ve ever felt openly discriminated against in this country.

We were told by the host that we’d be seated in a “temporary” area until something opened up in the main bar. That turned out to be a small, dimly lit, secluded room, completely cut off from the actual atmosphere. We assumed this was a short wait. It wasn’t. We were left there for the entire visit, despite the host walking past us repeatedly and seating dozens of other new patrons in the main space with zero follow-up or acknowledgment. We were then served our main drinks in this secluded room.

What made the situation feel even worse was the clear pattern: the only other couple seated in this isolated area also appeared South Asian, like myself. My white partner noticed this immediately. It felt like we were being hidden, not seated.

I didn’t visit one of North America’s “top bars” to be quietly placed in a seperate area and forgotten. Whether this was intentional or unconscious bias, the outcome was the same: exclusion. In a city like Montreal, at a venue of this reputation, it’s utterly unacceptable.

I’m sharing this publicly because this wasn’t just poor service, it was a moment that made me feel unwelcome based on how I look. I hope the management takes this seriously, reflects on the implications of this kind of experience, and addresses how guests are treated, especially those from marginalized communities.

Great atmosphere and neat space. You really have to know what you like or feel like - type of spirits, flavour profile, what alcohol you normally drink. It might be difficult for the staff to come up with something that match your mood if you don’t drink much. There is a good selection of tinctures and alcohol. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.

Hands down best cocktail bar experience, and we've had quite a few! Very chill vibes with just the right level of musical ambience. Maximilian and Hugo were amazing at listening and delivering. I personally love ordering custom cocktails wherever I go. But Cloakroom went above and beyond anything I expected. We felt warmly welcomed since the minute we entered. Every single person in our party was blown away by every single drink we tasted. They were not only delicious but often elicited strong emotional reactions. We're out-of-towners seeking out North America's best bars, but if I lived in Montréal I honestly think I'd be a regular here! I hope the place never changes coz I'm definitely coming back in future. All the best wishes to the Cloakroom and its cocktail artists.

The cocktails here are objectively great and I understand exactly why this place made the “best bar” lists—the no menu shtick, clean minimalist vibe of the space and cocktails, and polished service lend themselves naturally to those kind of upper crust rankings. The bartenders who discuss your preferences in order to select cocktails are efficient, almost to a fault, to the point that I felt a little boxed in. I appreciate the difficulty of the no menu concept and that you have to distill folks’ tastes down into convenient boxes, but “spirit forward gin” doesn’t inherently mean Negroni or martini, so I was a little surprised by the rigidity of the drink planning conversation. I can’t help but compare it to another small but well known “no menu” bar in town, where my drink-planning conversation was much more organic. Yes, that bartender talked about his own personal favorites and ingredients he was experimenting with and thus placed himself into the conversation more, but it felt much more intimate and personal that way and I’ve got to say that I preferred that experience to Cloakroom’s more sanitized one. That being said, I did end up with 2 delicious drinks at Cloakroom (plus the welcome drink—a really nice touch), but there was nothing else particularly memorable about the experience. The drinks are so balanced (again, objectively great), but there’s nothing to make you say “wow”—no surprising moment in the drink, no charming garnish, and those small moments are what make a drink truly memorable in my eyes, and that’s missing here. Sometimes I think this is a fault of being a part of the elite list of “the best”—is some bit of character (maybe even some playfulness) lost?

Enjoyed the no-menu experience. The team built everything that was requested.
