Went on this tour in early October and absolutely loved it- so much so, that I couldn’t wait to bring my hubby and kids back!
Website said the church is open for tours from 11:30-12:30 on Sunday’s after the services. Due to traffic, we got to the church at 12:10 (which left us plenty of time for the 15 minute tour). When we got there, the people working were walking out the door and had just locked the doors! They wouldn’t even open them back up to let us in to a place that was supposed to be open!! So disappointing!! The tour was an integral part of our Newport visit- wish they would have done the right thing and stayed open or at least have opened the door when we got there since they were supposed to be there anyway.
We took the Colonial Newport Walking Tour as a shore excursion on our Silver Shadow Cruise. Ken, our guide, gave us a lot of information on Newport and Rhode Island’s early history. A major stop is Trinity Church. Here we learn about the church’s early roots, designed like the Old North Church in Boston. Inside we see how each family had their own block. We saw this in the old North Church. Each family decorated their section. The church was very plain in the past without Stain Glass windows. Today stained glass windows are used as fundraiser for the church. A lot of history in the church.
Beautiful and well-kept Episcopal Church dating back to 1698. Only four churches of this type, with box pews, remain in the United States and one is located in Boston. The church can be visited independently for free, or you can ask a guide to explain it to you. We opted for the guide (which I recommend), who explained and illustrated the church to us very well. In exchange they ask for a free offer.
I walk past this church every morning and never went inside until a few days ago. It’s one of the most beautiful churches you will ever visit. George Washington worshiped here in 1781 and his pew is marked. We had an impromptu tour given by a lovely woman who shared so much of the church’s history.
This is a MUST when visiting Newport.
⛪✝️Lovely Church & Cemetery⛪✝️I wasn't able to go inside of the church; however, while touring the Newport area on foot, I passed by Trinity Church and enjoyed strolling through the small cemetery and reading the history and headstones. There is much for photographers, architects, and history buffs to enjoy. The grounds are lush with greenery and shaded by either the trees or the church itself, depending upon the time of day. It's a lovely spot to take a moment to collect yourself, breathe, and reflect before continuing on your way.
In the park, Alfredo from the Music Together church is wonderful, fantastic, we have a lot of fun and learn.
We attended a service here today to see the church & tour it (as far as I can tell, currently, historic tours are only open on Sundays after service). The immediate vibe was warm and welcoming, much like the city itself. They made this service very tourist friendly with well laid out pamphlets so you didn’t get lost during it. We followed along easily with our respective protestant and catholic backgrounds. It was beautiful, well-preserved, with ushers and individual box pews. There’s historical plaques on the walls and a self-guided tour pamphlet you can grab at the door. It was a very cool experience; definitely worth going. The historic graveyard around the church is also interesting.
Beautiful church in a beautiful city!
A beautiful old church. Under construction, but open for services. A calm little park sits in front of it.
Beautiful historic church!

What a gorgeous church that just towers over Newport. Such a awesome church!
It's an attractive historic church that comes alive with a tour. We went last weekend and were blown away by the knowledge and passion of the tour guide. I can't recommend it enough!
We were welcomed warmly and invited to tour the church. We were guided through the church in about 15-20 minutes by our knowledgeable tour guide with many interesting facts I had never heard about. We really weren’t expecting a tour so this was a very pleasant surprise!
What a gorgeous church that just towers over Newport. Such a awesome church!
The oldest Episcopal Church in America. Excellent worship experience. Go ask for a tour and stay to worship.
