What a fantastic place! If in Charleston, SC, this is a must eat!

Was sat at a table for 20 minutes and was never waited on while other tables were being waited on almost immediately. Left and went elsewhere.

Genuinely the best dining experience I have ever had from food to excellent staff!

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at this restaurant. My wife and I had dinner here, and every dish we tried was full of flavor and beautifully prepared. We ordered the 1‑pound Nola‑style shrimp, which was cooked perfectly, with spices that were bold yet well‑balanced, offering just the right amount of heat. Our second entrée was the signature fried grits cake topped with shrimp, a creative Southern dish that was rich and indulgent, just as expected. While it was quite hearty, the flavors and textures were exceptional. As a pleasant surprise, we were served complimentary appetizers and a side of fresh, crisp coleslaw, which provided a refreshing contrast to the richness of the main courses. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the service attentive without being intrusive, and the hospitality truly made us feel welcome. We highly recommend this restaurant to anyone seeking delicious, well‑executed Southern cuisine in a friendly setting.

My wife and I and a friend were referred here by another friend and we were not disappointed. On our visit, we had the deviled crabs (2) and Buffalo shrimp combo, which was delicious, as well as the low country shrimp and grits, the almond sesame salad, and bourbon glazed Brussels sprouts, all great options. We were fortunate to be greeted by the owner and strongly advised to let him or his staff know if anything was wrong, which showed how involved the team is at maintaining high standards. The service was fantastic and very courteous. Definitely a must-do when in town again!

This place is 100% analog in an overdigitized society. In the best way. There is nothing here for your insta-feed. No chi-chi watermelon gazpacho, fusion cuisine, and abstract art garnishes. It’s massive portions of really high-quality comfort food. Anti-modern. Well-made with lots coming your way. I’ve been here twice for lunch. They are intent on stuffing you. Free boiled peanuts and sweet almost-a-donut hushpuppies. A massive shrimp po-boy with massive shrimp and outstanding array of sides (perfectly balanced slaw!) and sauces. Seabass croquettes that are a bit like lump Maryland crabcakes but perhaps with a little more filling/breading. Fast service, hot food, friendly servers (Jaden had just started but a very friendly and capable server—they know how to hire). One of the owners (Eli) was schmoozing the guests and giving driving directions to out-of-towners. This place is about connecting people and getting off our devices. It’s the LP record or film camera you should be using more. It’s a refreshing break from the stripped down, alienated, and polished surfaces sucking the life out of us moment by moment. It’s dinner at your bubbie’s or nonna’s favorite place. A gift shop attached, brass celebrity markers on tables. The place is a huge warren of rooms but still warm and friendly. They even have looping videos of waterfalls over the men’s room urinals for God’s sake. Clearly, these mensches are here to serve. The one thing that might be a helpful evolution is a few more options in the way of a “diet plate” as they used to call it. Not necessarily the watermelon gazpacho but, you know.

Hyman's Seafood is an Experience. Famously popular with tourists and they don't take reservations, so plan to wait a bit. They do provide occasional tasty hushpuppies to those patiently waiting on the sidewalk. Inside it's a bit of a hodgepodge of rooms and tables, many of the latter with brass nameplates noting which celebrity ate at this table. Walls are festooned with signed photos of those celebrities, so you're in good company. The food is very good and portions are generous. Prices are surprisingly reasonable. Staff are friendly and attentive and you might get a brief visit from one of the owners just to check on how you're doing. Also a gift shop on your way out. All in all a fun and tasty Experience.

After traveling from Indiana there's finally a place that might have topped Heston's supper clubs calamari. Highly recommend the Philly tacos and haddock

Hyman’s Seafood is an absolute must-visit! Everything we ordered was delicious, especially the fried green tomatoes and the crispy flounder. Flounder is one of my favorite dishes, but I’ve never had it prepared in such a unique crisscross style—it was outstanding. The apricot chutney that came with it was incredible, and I don’t usually even like fruit sauces! Our waiter was fantastic (I think his name was Justin or Jason), attentive and friendly the whole time. To top it off, not one but two members of the Hyman family stopped by our table to check on us, which made the meal feel extra special. Wonderful food, wonderful service, and a welcoming atmosphere. Just thinking about it makes me want to go back!

I realize Charleston is the #1 foodie town in America [it is, so don’t argue] and therefore the competition is stiff, but having eaten all over the country and had a lot of great seafood from San Diego and San Fran to New York, I am telling you this is literally one of the BEST restaurants in the nation. How in the Hell it is ranked #46 in Charleston (as of this writing) is one of the great mysteries of life like Bigfoot and how every dryer eats one sock. This is a 5th generation family restaurant and Eli Hyman stopped by to talk to us and make sure our meal was excellent. The place is often packed to gills and he didn’t have to do that, but it represents the class of this place. Their staff are highly attentive and all smiles. If going for lunch, be there 20-25 minutes before it opens because after that the wait increases exponentially - as it should for such a great spot. They have multiple options for fresh fish everyday and southern food (obviously) that you cannot go wrong with. They had a special on their croquette trio that day and I dove in. Absolutely amazing. One salmon, one crab cake and one Chilean sea bass. Incredible. Paired with their PERFECT hush puppies that was easily the best in lunch in Charleston - and this as my fourth time in town. Sad I didn’t make my way over there before now - but I will eat at Hyman’s on every future visit and so should you!

I hardly ever write reviews but Hyman’s goes out of its way to make you feel valued so I feel the need to reciprocate. We went on July 12 after spending a great weekend in Charleston after picking up our kids at summer camp. Not incidentally we also went to see the band Phish play at the North Charleston coliseum the night before. It was a weekend of fun and lots of fish and phish. After spending just under the quoted 50 min wait hanging out in the bar, we were seated. We had a really sweet waitress Wanda who took care of us and made us feel at home. Both the owners Victor and Eli came by to thank us for coming and gave the kids free ice cream. The food was really good. My mom used to make salmon croquettes but I’ve never had them like the hymans made them. My kids devoured their food! For some picky eaters that’s 5 star itself. The restaurant really has the old school charm that will make us want to come back every time we come to Charleston. I rarely ever frequent the same restaurant on trips but this will be a notable exception. Thanks guys for keeping it old school. Shout out to the Hymans also for showing their Jewish and pro Israel pride. Great really unique place. Would definitely recommend.

Deceiving customers who came to Charleston to eat local, fresh seafood yet serving imported shrimp. Not a fan.

Jonathan Harker

They are on the #shrimpgate imported “fresh” seafood list

Absolutely amazing! We had great service and great food. The service was absolutely over-the-top friendly and caretaking. The owner came out to greet us and thanked us for our business. They clearly are running this business with the servants heart. We will be back!
