Bertha's Kitchen is a beloved Gullah-southern-meat and three restaurant that has been serving customers home made southern fare since 1979. This true southern kitchen looks like a house and is set up cafeteria style. Customers order, the staff plates it, and they pay and either take it to go or sit in the small dining area. The food is amazing home food. Fried chicken, pork chops, fried fish and sides like Mac and cheese, limas, cornbread, red rice and okra stew are available. The fried chicken is recognized and comes up in all the searches. The ribs are so tender they literally were off the bone, the yams are Devine, and the cornbread is delicious. The okra soup, collards and fried whiting are delicious and pleasantly plentiful. The rich and flavorful food is consistently delicious. The cabbage is absolute fire, so tender and delicious. The red rice is good, but a bit on the dry side. The fried chicken is perfectly cooked and had a flaky crust but it needed salt. The staff were friendly and helpful, and service is very quick and efficient. There are a lot of regulars who come here because the staff joked and laughed with them as they waited in line. The line moved fast, and while waiting a woman came around with a tray and offered little cups of a frozen punch. The family portraits on display are lovely. This hidden gem is not to be missed if you are in the Charleston area.
