Food is really good but service is slowwwwww!!!!!! I try to go here every time I’m in town but I don’t always have an hour or longer to wait on food! They need to hire some help because I always see the same people when I come! Hopefully they can get it right soon because I’m sure they’re losing money because of it!

For context, I’m a career professional in the customer experience with almost 34 years of experience. I went here this morning to place a to go order, after I went to Door Dash and then their website to attempt to place an order and was unable to do so. I live across the street, so a walk wasn’t out of the question. When I arrived, there was a couple in front of me and the hostess stated it would be a 10-15 minute wait. I then asked to place a to go order and asked for a menu. Then the hostess disappeared - walked away from the host stand and out onto the floor. The restaurant was fairly busy for almost 10am, and I counted only three servers and one runner/busser.

From the time the hostess left the front of house, there were at least five other parties who arrived with no one to greet them. It was up to those of us who were waiting to explain what was happening. The wait staff had eyes on the front of house, yet not one of them made any attempt to find the hostess or even take it upon themselves to come up front to address the fifteen of us or so who were at that point waiting to be addressed.

After ten minutes of waiting, I opted to return the menu and walk out, along with three other parties.

Rule number one of restaurants: never leave the front of house unattended. Given the number of people in the departing parties who left, there was at least $300 in revenue lost. Secondly, make your menu available online. Had I been able to see a menu before I walked over, I could have already made my decisions and placed my order the minute I was greeted. Instead, I had to take time to review a menu and then lost contact with the one person who was waiting on me.

Visually, the atmosphere is inviting and appealing, albeit a little dark. Seated customers seemed to be enjoying themselves, and even though the waitstaff did nothing to address those of us waiting alone up front, they did seem attentive to their tables.

I’ll give Sugar Grits another chance, but they need to ensure they are prepared to do better next time.

Stopped into Sugar Grits for breakfast and was not disappointed. Good portions and tasty. We were in on a Wednesday morning and seemed as if we may have been the first guest of the day. So it was very quiet, no wait. Seems like there was only one server, which might have become a problem but never was while we were there.
Server was very polite and on top of her game. Sugar Grits helped make our Memphis trip a great time!

I got the chicken sausage grits bowl, and a side of toast. I was shocked at how SMALL the bowl of grits was. For $15.99 I guess I expected more food. The bowl was good, but for a small AND expensive portion, I sort of expect it to blow me away..
I also had to pay for my toast separately since the grits bowl does not come with any sides.
My “side of toast” was ONE singular slice of the smallest piece of bread I’ve ever seen. I’ve NEVER in my life ordered a side of toast in a restaurant and received anything less than 2 slices. For $1.99 they’re just being cheap as hell.
I did see some bad reviews about the service, but I personally had good service. Not exceptional, but they were fast and I had no complaints.

Wouldn’t waste my time here again.

Dined here on a visit to Memphis. Close walk from my hotel downtown, but the food left much to be desired. Grits were cold and bland as others have indicated. My order was made incorrectly TWICE. I built my own omelette and for some reason they kept putting the wrong ingredients inside. My mom’s bacon was burned in her omelette. Over awful experience. Felt like a waste of money because we left and immediately got take out nearby. Would not recommend at all.

Our 2nd time to Memphis and Sugar Grits. The biscuit board is the bomb!!!! Bacon and sausage along with the flavored butters made each biscuit unique. The server was great and took care of our every request. 3 of us shared the breakfast board and added eggs coffee was hot and perfectly balanced. Highly recommend breakfast at Sugar Grits.

I visited on a Sunday and had the Shrimp and grits with a sunny side up egg and a Bloody Mary and both were delicious. But what I appreciated the most was the customer service they were busy but the person who helped me was professional and polite and treated me like I was the only person in the restaurant.
