We stopped at Marhaba on our way to Amarillo and the food hit the spot. The lady greeting us was very kind and welcoming and helped us pick the right menu- we got both the veggie and the meat combo and the food was absolutely delicious.

The restaurant interior was also very theme oriented and one that catches your attention the moment you walk in. You can tell the owners put a lot of effort into every detail.

Will definitely be back!

After two days of driving and consuming bad, unhealthy food on the road, we came upon this culinary oasis when we arrived in Amarillo. I know what you may be thinking...there is a dissonance when you hear Ethiopian/Eritrean in this beef-centric and golden fried part of the state.

If you’ve never tried East African cuisine, do not be intimidated. It is delicious, super healthy, and an accessible choice.

We ordered the vegetarian combo for two, a generous serving of 5 flavor-packed, slow braised dishes.

Here’s the savory lowdown:
Spicy potato stew with garlic, tomato sauce, onion and spices
Spicy red lentils
Yellow split pea stew with turmeric, onions, garlic, celery, ginger
Cabbage with garlic, carrots, onions, potatoes and turmeric.
Collard greens and spinach sautéed with onions, garlic, ginger, olive oil, and jalapenos.

Despite the unique spices used, these dishes were similar to the sides you might find at a Southern meat-and-three restaurant, with collards, cabbage, and potatoes. For carnivores, I recommend beef stew, which was redolent of carne guisada

Tucked in a modest setting in a strip mall, it is colorfully decorated with clothing, kitchenware and dining settings from Ethiopia and Eritrea. I felt the food was made with care, pride and was a warm representation of this community.

I thought about Bourdain during this experience for a lot of reasons. His quote that goes something like...” Eat at a local restaurant tonight...somewhere you’ve never been. Be open to a world you may not understand. Enjoy the ride.”

We have eaten at Ethiopian restaurants before. I’m sorry to say that Mariana Eritrean and Ethiopian Restaurant was a disappointment. The food was lacking in taste. The beef was dry and chewy. The chicken was unappetizing.

Service was OK but I was surprised that they didn’t allow my wife to pray in their restaurant. This restaurant serves halal food so I have reason to suspect that they understand Muslim traditions. My family were the only customers they had but they refused to allow my wife to pray her midday prayers on their premises. They claimed someone might object.

Maybe … if they had any customers besides us.

Better tasting food and a more gracious attitude would help.

We won’t be back.

The food was delicious but paying $21.00 for meat and bread is insane, I was expecting vegetables eggs or other things to complete a plate of food, not just bread 'injera' and meat, do better.

Wonderful Ethiopian Cuisine. We are vegan, and love a variety of spices. Ethiopian food is a very healthy choice and comes with a delicious spice array. The service is very friendly...and will help you if this is your first time. Dishes are prepared and served on a injerra bread base, with additional injeera. The injerra is used to gather a portion by hand...to eat in a traditional way. If you prefer silverware, it can be accommodated...but enjoy it traditionally, if you can. If you're like us...abd looking for a delicious and healthy meal...this place should be on your list.

really love shopping at this Habesha store! The staff are very friendly and welcoming. They always have fresh injera, spices, and all the traditional Ethiopian and Eritrean products I need. The store is clean, organized, and feels like home. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for authentic Habesha items!”
