We were pleasantly surprised by the food here! Just passing through Austin and had a craving for wings! I didn’t expect much from a sports bar, as we do not appreciate the overstimulating environment with so many tvs and games and noise, but decided we wanted to try the “best wings in Austin.” The Old Fashioned was the best one I’ve had! The medium flavored wings were perfectly cooked, wet with sauce and super flavorful. The curry flavor was rich, aromatic and deliciously spicy! The garlic Parmesan fries were evenly coated with seasoning and were crispy even after sitting as we ate our wings.
The only negative was that I never received the lemon I requested with my water, and we didn’t receive a “bones bucket” that we saw other tables had. This was a fantastic eating experience and would recommend the food here over and over!

When Good Eats Austin asked it readers for suggestions of good places to get chicken wings, Wingzup Bar & Grill was suggested a bunch of times. I decided to check them out this week and, our readers don’t lie – their wings are lit!
I decided to try both traditional bone in and boneless to get an idea of how both taste and of the quality of the meat. For the traditional, I always get a Medium Buffalo sauce so I can compare the taste from restaurant to restaurant. For the boneless, I usually get them plain and ask to taste their most popular sauces.
Wingzup Medium Buffalo is everything you want in a wing, generous size, cooked perfectly with a sauce that sticks to the meat. Wingz up generously sauces their wings, so there are leftovers in the tray to dip your fries. If you don’t do that, you should start today. I always get Bleu Cheese dressing with wings, it was good and thick.
For the boneless wings, I tried five different sauces – Jalapeno Ranch, Buffalo Ranch, Mango Habanero, Korean Sweet Chili, and a Korean Buldak.
My favorite sauce of the five was the Korean Sweet Chili. The sauce gets its distinctive taste from a fermented red chili paste (Gochujang) combined with sugar. The combined flavors give you a sweet taste at first with a follow-up of a tangy, spicy (but not too hot) finish.
Many of you may be familiar with the Buldak sauce which is often used to add heat and flavor to chicken ramen dishes. Like the Gochujang, Buldak used both sweet and spicy flavors. It is most often made using a chili extract and then adding in onion, garlic, soy sauce and corn syrup. The amount of chili extract controls the level of heat. Wingzup is not trying to smoke diners too bad, but if you’re not used to the flavor it will hit you a bit on that first bite. I really liked that one too.
Stephanie, my waiter has been at Wingzup for almost five years. She recommended the Jalapeno Ranch, but let me know she loves to dip the fries in it. I definitely agree with her, and I has to ration some fries from my earlier medium buffalo sauce dipping ritual to soak up that goodness.
The Mango Habanero is also very good, but once Stephanie brought me out the Korean Sweet Chili, I abandoned the rest of the cup.
All of the sauces at Wingzup are homemade. Yes, you heard that correctly. A Korean couple own the restaurant, and the wife prepares every sauce from scratch. There is no Sysco truck bringing big jugs in this place. The couple came to Austin, after a stop in Canada for a few year. That is why you will see both a Korean and Canadian flair to some of the dishes.
As an example, they offer four different types of Poutines on the menu, which is a dish of French fries and cheese curds topped with a brown gravy. It comes form the Centre-du-Quebec region of Quebec. Wingzup has the original version and some tasty variations.
Wingzup has a full menu of items to choose from including a great burger that they run as a special on Thursdays for $10. You get the third-pound burger with fries on the side. I would forego my normal ketchup and mayo condiment combo to put some of the Sweet Chili sauce on top. Stephanie recommends trying the Fried Sliced Pickles as an appetizer. They also do a Fried Pickle Spear. Where do you ever see both on a menu?
The ambiance of Wingzup is sort of sport bar-ish. There are a TON of televisions where you could watch ice hockey, curling or some of those American sports if you are so inclined. I really liked the wings a lot and would put this right up there with Anchor Bar in Round Rock and Wings and More in Pflugerville. Don’t forget Tater Que’s too. I’ve got eight other wing stops on this list, so we will see which of those make the upper tier. #MattGoodEats

Usually love the wings, but had someone's that we didn't enjoy, communicated to the waiter (who had also spilled a huge drink just previously) and then paid full price for them without replacement offer etc! Which was kind of eh to me. As an industry professional I wanna make all my tables leave happy not mediumly satisfied. So that was disheartening! Overall usually love the place.
