BEST CHOCOLATE PIE I HAVE EVER TASTED! Chances is a little hidden treasure, located on the first floor of the Tolleson Family Activity Center (part of Highland Park United Methodist Church). The cafe is staffed with volunteers from HPUMC's "disABILITY Ministry." Not a bad attitude in the place! ;-) They serve fresh-brewed coffee, their "signature" iced tea, fruited water, and PIE! The pies are adorable in their individually-sized little tins, perfectly portable to take back to the office or dorm (if you can resist the instant gratification!). Chances will also take advanced orders for full-sized pies. All the pies are lovingly made by Miss Betty Jo, who appears to prefer using her own family recipes. Her apple pie was super fresh-tasting, with just the right amount of crispness and tartness. And "chocolate cream pie" doesn't begin to adequately describe the rich, decadent pool of fudginess that fills its shell! If you love chocolate, you gotta try this one! There are also other pie flavors in rotation -- right now, it's cherry (haven't tried that one yet!). Take note that the cafe is only open from 7:30am-12:30pm, Sun-Thurs. (bummer!) Because they are so new, there is never a long wait for service and the Tolleson Center has free Wi-Fi and very convenient underground parking off of Hillcrest. I find Chances Pie & Coffee Cafe is the perfect place to spend an hour or two with my laptop, some hot coffee, and an occasional little pie of my own! :-) I highly recommend giving them a try!
