Hidden gem. Don’t let the humble exterior fool you. I had the tamales and my husband fajitas. Both were excellent. Save room for the churros. They were to die for. The staff was very friendly.

Today was the first day and the last that I am going to eat at this place, I ordered a fajita duck that is actually very delicious but I noticed that there was a hair in my food and when I told the waiter he told me " I left the Czech thing with the boy but the truth is that everyone back there is hairy." out of place on the part of the waiter!!! I will not return to this place

The experience that my family and I received was completely unacceptable at our last visit. Servers/bussers do not know how to behave professionally around tables. They talk very loud and hang around a certain area near the restrooms without any consideration to the surrounding tables. They are not attentive until someone tells them what to do and the conservation that is heard is inappropriate for the open dining that this restaurant has. There were some topics that were cause for concern and that I could not ignore. The employees had lots of complaints against their employers (sounds like the owners do not care very much for their employees nor for the upkeep of the building as there was talk of a failed health inspection that was recently done). The server that attended us did not seem to be very well trained and showed very little interest in us. We could not tell if she was busy with any other tables she may have had but any interaction with her was unhelpful and unpleasant. The food was decent but is definitely not worth the amount we paid despite being one of the more affordable places here in north Denton. We truly appreciate the servers Ricky, Chao, Chao Jr and Hugo who have shown to be hard workers and give authentic service. Hopefully someone of management recognizes the state in which this restaurant has fallen and can fix it as it has great potential. El Matador is home to many and it would truly be sad for this Denton staple to go under.

They actively discriminate against solo diners. I was seated, by the old man hostess, in the corner next to a large group with teenagers and kids who were being way too loud and obnoxious. There were PLENTY of other tables he could have easily sat me at.I have no idea why he decided to do this to me as I have always been kind to everyone and have tipped well. But it was pretty clear that I wasn't welcome, for some reason. The fajitas were decent. Not the best but not the worst. While this place is a Denton staple, it really could be so much better without much effort. It survives because its one of the few large, sit-down, Mexican restaurants in Denton. Any real competition would put it out of business. If you have a family, they treat you mostly ok because they assume your tip will be larger.

Love that you can get sauté veggies instead of beans with rice.
Growing up in Texas, most of us had that family owned Mexican joint we ate dinner at once a week - that is El Matador. It has that TexMex comfort food vibe. Great margaritas and enchiladas.
