Great food with outstanding staff!
Been looking for a good soul food spot in Garland? Your search is over.
Stopped by JDs Food Box yesterday on Broadway, and I’m glad I did. Got the full rundown from Chef Herman before ordering, and I decided to go with the fried pork chops with the candied yams and the collard greens. And I had to order the chef’s special, the Caribbean oxtail balls, too.

Based on the reviews, JDs Food Box is a small, clean, and popular soul food spot. The staff is hardworking and lovely, giving a full rundown of the menu and answering all questions. The food is fresh and full of flavor, with everything made to order, so there can be a long wait, but it is worth it. The oxtail plate was good with a nice smokey flavor, and the fried catfish was fried perfectly with a really nice cornbread batter. The Mac & cheese was very, very, very cheesy and to die for. The cornbread was some of the best, a sweeter corn bread with a fairly dense texture. The Caribbean oxtail balls were a revelation, filled with meat and rice with a crispy crust. The highlight was the fried ribs with so much flavor. Desserts like the sweet potato egg rolls and banana pudding were outstanding. The specials change regularly, and there is a selection of different fruit lemonades. The prices are good. It is only open Thursday through Sunday.
