Roast beef and shrimp poboy sandwiches.Great selection of craft beers! I am not a roast beef sandwich guy but this one is exceptional.

Let’s get straight to it…The food is absolutely sub par to say the least.Fried catfish, wet and slimy inside.Wife ordered seafood platter w/ blackened oysters. The oysters came out fried (server knew it because she said so when she arrived at the table, DONT BRING IT OUT IF ITS NOT RIGHT!) The fries tasted like chemicals, the FRIED oyster tasted like old oil (mostly everything fried had this after taste to it).Baked boudin was very over cooked. We had a table of 7 - four of which were kids. We didn’t find out until we PLACED our order that they didn’t have any more burgers, maybe I’m setting my standards too high for folks these days but that would be pertinent info to share IMO that the most popular KIDS MENU ITEM is out of stock for a table with FOUR KIDS!My plate, the blackened catfish with crawfish fondue. Absolutely disgusting I’m sorry. It all tasted artificial I couldn’t eat it. Horrible after tastes etc. the potato salad tasted like mashed up rubber grit with uncooked bigger rubber chunks inside (potatoes). Again, tasted like Chemical. White rice over cooked and mushy, very unpleasant.Children settled for chicken tenders and fries. They BARELY ate any of it. Wow, kids BARELY eating chicken strips and fries?? That’s very telling. So I tried it myself, dry and 100% flavorless, bland.Service: overall service was OK, food took extremely long and restaurant was not slammed at all. But, friendly staff.I stood up and one of the ladies asked how was it? Now I’m not one to lie so I don’t hurt your feelings, you ask me I’m going to be honest. I told her I didn’t like it one bit the food was horrible. Absolutely no care in the world lol I couldn’t believe it. No one gave two sh*ts that we just spent $150 and didn’t enjoy not a single thing we ordered. We literally left FULL PLATES on the table, paid our tab (yes we left gratuity-not the waitresses fault the food was horrible) and we took the kids to McDonald’s because now it’s too late in the evening to get home and cook. Live and learn, to stay away from Verna Mae’s. Sorry not sorry. Y’all need to turn this around and do it quickly. You can’t withstand too many customers having these types of experiences and expect to stay in business in the city of Houston. Tighten up. We will not return. Hands down the worse meal I have ever spent my money on. I hope someone finds this review and takes head. Go to McDonald’s instead and save yourself the wasted money lol. Good grief.

Wanted to checkout this place for their po-boys after hearing about it on FB. Ended up not ordering a po-boy though so will have to check that out next time. We tried the 6” Muffuletta (was OK, but not great as it is served on po-boy bread and not your traditional muffuletta bread), 1/2 fried shrimp and 1/2 fried catfish basket (this was really tasty - it came with 4 shrimp and 2 catfish and I ate them ALL), fried catfish basket, and chicken strip basket. Overall - their service was fantastic - very attentive and friendly (thank you Brianna!) and their food was good. I would give their fried shrimp and catfish 5 stars and the sides of french fries, onion rings, hush puppies a 3 - hence the 4 stars. We went on a Wednesday night and Ladies drinks are $2.50 so I got a 12 oz frozen White Russian type drink. It was OK, but wouldn’t get it again. Three in the group ordered cokes which were served in soft plastic cups and they all said the drinks didn’t taste right. However, they never said anything to the server - so we have no idea if it was a one-off due to something with the syrup or if the taste was coming from the plastic cups. Overall, it was fun trying out a new to us restaurant. Next time we’ll try the po-boys and definitely get the fried shrimp / fish again.

What a difference a year makes. The first time I went here I loved the beignets but the rest of the food was just okay. On my recent visit the food really stepped up. The flavor was spot on and the beignets were still over the top great. We had an array of dishes and were very impressed with the food overall. Super nice staff and very attentive. The decorations and small store in the back are great touches to add to that New Orleans vibe.

I was very DISAPOINTED with my entire order, I ordered a bowel of seafood gumbo with only TWO shrimp and the roue (YUCK) was very spicey hot /peppery to taste, NO CAJUN taste to be found, plus I ordered a side of hushpuppies, NOW they advertise authentic New Orleans Cajun food, WHY were the hushpuppies previously frozen and i received them cold, so the texture to taste was gummy .. I will never purchase anything from this spot again

Great food: including the authentic roast beef poboy, muffaletta, boudin balls, beignet bites, great crawfish, and awesome homemade sauces (remoulade, tartar sauce, cocktail sauce) with the great seafood; super nice people, laid back atmosphere, live entertainment sometimes, good daiquiris

The best REAL Cajun food you'll find in Houston!! The staff treats you like family. in there at least twice a week and even more during crawfish season!!!! I love the seafood gumbo, friend catfish, fried shrimp, potato salad, bread pudding... basically everything??

Their fry game is on point. Cauliflower app and po boy were great, needs pickles. Batter is tasty and stays put. Gumbo was disappointing and beignets were tasteless and too dense, more like hush puppies covered in powder sugar. Service was excellent.

Visited for the first time this past Saturday and I was impressed. The service is great and the food was cooked fresh. Everything we ordered was great especially the boudain balls and crawfish. Katy was our waitress, she was extremely personable and helped with recommendations which I appreciated. We never had to wait long for anything so that speaks volumes about the service. Thank you!

If you want a GREAT Hurricane, reasonable prices, and the atmosphere of New Orleans, Verna Mae's is the place to go! Generally, going during the week is best. They also have lunch specials that are fantastic. The staff is attentive, and the food is wonderful. Excellent Po Boys, Gator, Gumbo, and soft shell crabs. However, the noise level the last two visits has been outrageous. Our waitress last visit (Polly) was having to yell to be heard. She was great, but it was a fight to get our drinks and speak back and forth. My wife and I both mentioned that our ears physically hurt. Sure we went on a Saturday night @ 7:00 PM, and expected a raucous crowd. We sat at the back, and there were three (3) groups of NOLA residents that were having a wonderful time. Donated to the Fund Raiser, but could hardly hear about the deserving cause due to the noise. However, with concrete floors and a DJ with no sense of volume, we didn't stay for dessert or another round of drinks (Scooby Doo). We decided to go elsewhere, causing a loss of revenue for Verna Mae's. Since there is apparently no concern for the hearing of staff and patrons, Verna Mae's is not a place that we can gamble upon. Too many other places where you can hear and be understood. Sad, because we genuinely adore the place. Best of luck to this family run restaurant.

Yummy food!!! I enjoyed my blackened catfish with rice covered in fondue. The bread pudding was a mouthwatering dessert. The Mardi Gras decorations were authentic. They even had a piano and microphone just like the clubs on Bourbon Street. The final item that makes you feel like you are in New Orleans was a framed photo of Louis Armstrong on the wall. Verna Mae's is a wonderful dining experience!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Super Food. Took the whole family there in early April 2022. The server Pauley was outstanding. Start off with 5 pounds of crawfish for my youngest daughter, 28, She was extremely pleased. The crawfish were huge and mixed in with mediums they were exceptional. Cook very well by a Louisiana cook. Everything else we had was seafood. From fried to grilled it was all very good. It's a three minute drive from our house and I know will be back.

We really like Verna Mae's. Their crawfish is well seasoned and an affordable price. My husband has had the fried shrimp and onion rings and loved them. The onion rings are fantastic. They also have house-made sauces that are yummy! Not much of an atmosphere, though. It's usually pretty empty when we go. But the staff is super friendly.
