I'm a sucker for pan dulce and this place kicks off HARD.
I don't think I've ever seen a place in the valley that offers Breakfast, Lunch and/or Merienda.

Because I ate lunch I really didn't get a chance to drink coffee but I did take some pan dulce home and it was great.
The back story of the owners is great and they were running around helping where they can.

The place has been around for more than 50 years from what the owner told me. They know exactly what they are doing.

I visit Rex, occasionally, to reminisce about my Dad. I enjoy conversations with other patrons, as I have a good cup of coffee. The food is simple goodness.

Food was good, service was alright other than the server gave our drink to the wrong table then goes and gets it from them and brings it to us. We couldn't tell if the people had touch it already.

Today I am saddened 😔 worst chillaquilles ever. They were already mush before I started eating. I understand they get soft with salsa. But this was like atole. 🤮. I like them crispy

Nostalgia is heavy in the air in this place. Take a trip back to what felt like a classical era in McAllen. Food is good. Sweet bread availability is a plus.

Family owned as far as I can remember. The empanadas and sweet bread are awesome. Take home a dozen of empanadas, keep in frig and warm them up alitttle on microwave and as if they just came out of oven. They are delicious!!!!

The waitress didn’t speak much English and I didn’t speak much Spanish, but we figured it out. Special today was fideo. This restaurant makes the chicken on the bone with the soup and it makes a world of difference in the flavor. Truly amazing. The beans that are served on the side are top tier. I would have been happy with a bowl of these beans and some tortillas. I wanted to try a fajita taco on the side, but they would only sell them as a plate of 3, so that’s a missed opportunity there. Overall I would definitely return. Another positive is that they stay open later than the other places downtown. They also do not ask for a tip? Not sure if I should have left some cash on the table, since I paid with card.

One of the original restaurants in the McAllen downtown area, they offer affordable daily specials, they tend to run out of the popular dishes. I had the 🍔 hamburger, the bun was toasted on a grill, it tasted homemade. Combo, served with a drink and a side of fries. Menudo is on the menu. They make their own Mexican style pastry.

Make sure to take quarters for the parking meter and cash for leaving a tip for your server, their POS system doesn't allow tips to be applied to credit cards, nor debit cards.

I wanted to share my thoughts about a restaurant that holds a special place in my heart. This establishment has a rich history, one that dates back to the times when my father used to bring me here. It has always been a unique experience, reminiscent of home in Mexico.

Whether it’s for lunch, dinner, or simply enjoying a delicious piece of bread, this restaurant captures the essence of comfort and tradition. It’s a place that feels like home, and I cherish every visit.
