“Walking into Kainan Sa Laguna was like visiting an auntie’s house for a home cooked meal. Unpretentious, relaxed, with Filipino soap operas playing on the TV.For the savory items, I got pinakbet, menudo, diniguan, and lumpia Shanghai. Everything was pretty tasty, albeit slightly on the oily side. The lumpia was fresh out of the fryer when I got them, crisp with a well-seasoned filling. The real star of my meal, however, was the “sweet” part—the puto. This isn’t your typical cake flour puto. Theirs is made the old school way with rice flour. The (I assume) owner says it’s a three day process, which involves her grinding the rice by hand. You can really tell by the texture of it. It’s fluffy in an imperfectly perfect kind of way and slightly sticky/chewy with a kiss of sweetness. It was really a delightful experience.I’ll definitely come back when I’m looking for a comforting meal to “bring me home.”“
