Masami Sushi in Richardson, TX, usually hits it out of the park, and even with a slight hiccup, their sushi remains great—fresh and with excellent options. We enjoyed the ambiance of the private dining area, which is always a nice touch. However, on this particular weeknight, the experience was a bit marred by service that was just okay and a noticeably slow pace for the food to come out. This was uncharacteristic, as we ordinarily love this place for its promptness. While it wasn't their usual stellar performance, the quality of the sushi still shines through. They definitely could have done better on service this time, but it won't deter us from returning.

Delicious. Highly recommend the tempura vegetables and sushi. We enjoyed the salmon, heart attack, and spicy tuna rolls. Would highly recommend.

Our waitress, Pauline, was PHENOMENAL! We got there right when they reopened for dinner, and were some of the first people in there. This restaurant was packed not even 30 minutes later.
Our group of three ordered 5/6 appetizers and they were all delicious (TRY THE EGGPLANT!).
We ordered four different rolls and some individual sushi as well. And a few other items.
Everything we ate was so good and fresh. Pauline may have had several tables but each time she came and talked to us we could have been the only people on the planet. She was so attentive and sweet. This was our first time here, and I am so excited to visit again!

Genuine
horrible service and food came late
Man. Very disappointing service. The older lady was very rude when we asked her if it’s possible to get a discount on the item that we didn’t receive until one hour later. She legit said “but you ate it” when the person who waited an hour for their food to come out asked if she couldn’t possibly discount it. She could’ve easily said “sorry we can’t do that.” But she was condescending about it. By the way, the item was about $12. There was automatic gratuity of course because we had a table for 12. I don’t understand how a restaurant like this could be so busy. The food was mid and the service was terrible overall.

I really like Masami. Good sushi at reasonable prices. Staff is always nice as well. You won't find any "created player" rolls, but they make everything well. Good spot for a quiet date night.

Was terribly disappointed in our experience at Masami.
First, the wait was around 40 minutes, and the sign in system isn’t the best experience as there is no indication of when you would be called (sometimes they call parties of 4 ahead of parties of 2 to fill more space). That wasn’t the reason for the rating, but played into it after, as we were expecting a really delicious dinner since it seemed to be very popular.
Second, and most importantly, the food was just not up to par for what we were expecting, and just confused at some of the other reviews highlighting the quality of the food. We ordered the miso soup, which was good, but it went downhill from there. We ordered the Karrage chicken, which was disappointing. Unlike other places in the area or in Japan, these were more like chic fil a nuggets, and didn’t include any spicy mayo or sauce or spice to add to it, just a lemon. We got the tuna tower which had imitation crab, which seemed a bit odd and catered more to the American palette. We ordered the cucumber salad which was just okay, as well as soba noodles which were okay as well, would not be able to tell the difference from the frozen packs they sell at Asian grocery stores.
Lastly, at least in our experience, which doesn’t seem to be the norm, the fish quality was questionable. We ordered a yellowtail nigiri, yellowtail roll, and tuna nigiri (which we did not get). The yellowtail was off, and we have eaten fresh yellowtail at numerous restaurants in Dallas, around the US, and Japan, so this was an off taste, at least for us. We were left with a bad fishy taste in our mouth, and sadly would not come back.
The staff was nice, but the operation seemed inefficient, although it was packed, so not putting much weight on that. The food quality and taste, especially the fish, is the reason behind the review. It seems that it is more tailored to the American palette and at least in our experience had subpar fish quality, which is not acceptable compared to many other Asian spots in the area, many with lower average reviews than this one.

Tai sushi was ok; toro sushi was fishy.
Everything else was good.
Ice cream was big and a bit challenging to finish after the whole meal.

Got there before the rush, but it still took us 50 minutes to get our rolls.
Server was not attentive. Flavors were average.
