Fun place if you just want a good night with music and good priced booze! Bartenders could be a little more friendly but there is no entry fee and the dj always plays great music! ?

So poorly managed and there wasn’t a women’s bathroom in sight. My friend and I were told to go here to get some bar crawl passes for St. Patrick’s Day that ended up being a scam and were told “can you give us like 20 more minutes?” when we showed up ON TIME. We were so poorly treated and the man who took our ID’s was so rude. Go somewhere else.

This review has been looooong overdue! THIS PLACE IS THE BEST PLACE DOWNTOWN in my opinion!!! I’ve been to a few establishments in the downtown atea and this one right here is my go to. Everyone here is outgoing and makes you feel like family when you are there kinda like that old school tv show “Cheers”….”Sometimes you wanna go, where everybody knows your name…and they’re always glad you came” lol…The music here is always ???, the drinks are ??? It’s sad to see some of the reviews about this establishment because it’s always the complete opposite experience that I have when I go. Not sure what the back stories are for the other reviews because there are always two sides to each story but if you can’t handle your drinks and are a sloppy drunk, just know there are consequences for that ? Anyway….THANKS again to the amazing staff that always goes above and beyond to make sure their customers are taken care of and having the best time when they’re there ?

Came in a big group of girls Friday night. The first thing we did was head to the bathroom to pee. I noticed there wasn't a hook on the door so I asked my girlfriend to hold my things for me. She came into the stall to hold my coat which apparently was a big mistake. A female employee started yelling at her to get out of the stall and she said "I'm just holding her coat for her, I'm just helping her out" and another male employee kept asking if I needed to be escorted out. I wasn't even drunk, I was just trying to pee and didn't want to set my stuff down on the nasty floor. I think the only person we WEREN'T harassed by was coat check guy. There were girls passing out on couches and puking all over the bathroom but they wanted to escort ME out? If there's a policy against two people in the same stall, just say that. The DJ also sucked. He changed songs every 10 seconds. Has potential but I wouldn't come here again.

Cute a cozy little space. Came for the shades beer z before the place becomes a (club?). Still some of the best beers especially if you love sours or funky beers! There are tons of coaches and chairs to sit and enjoy your time. You have to check it out!!

Idk it was alright. We brought a friend for his 21st birthday as we were just bar hopping, the drinks were okay but didn’t seem to have much alcohol but at least tasted good. $10 I think for the special cocktail of the night (mind eraser) if you’re already slightly drunk it should be alright, so long as you enjoy blaring music, dark atmosphere, and the song changing every 45 seconds. If you’re just trying to party it’s aight.

Friendliest bartenders in all of Salt Lake City! They know how to treat you right! Great atmosphere all around.

Pretty vile establishment, would recommend going literally anywhere else. A group of my friends stopped by here on a night out and were already inside. As I was walking a few blocks to meet them there, they were already complaining to me about how hot and gross it was inside. I had to walk up to this crusty establishment alone and immediately felt unsafe before I could even get inside (which never happened.) Bouncers at the front door had awful vibes, denied me entry saying they weren't letting anyone else in, but they let a huge group of people inside not even 5 seconds prior to telling me that? Oh, and then the bouncer thought it would be appropriate to ask the very young girl behind me in line if she wanted to have sex with him. Don't know how this place is allowed to operate and I'm really glad they denied me entry, really dodged a bullet there. Also hilarious to read the owner's petty and immature responses to every single bad review on here, avoiding any accountability whatsoever.

This establishment takes the crown as the worst, most disgusting, and outright dangerous place I’ve ever given my patronage.Does anyone enjoy the smells of vomit, feces, and urine? What about many instances of severely inebriated minors spilling drinks on your clothes? Dancing is fun for many, but do you like when songs abruptly transition every 20 seconds? I, personally, really love having my bank account drained when attempting to order a vodka soda, don’t you? Does you mind touch the void when waiting in the numerous lines throughout the interior and exterior? Do the eyes of the (vape in hand and mouth) manager glare back in the darkness? What about the blood covered entryway, does that scare you? Was that threatening feeling; as if the bouncer was about to punch you while checking IDs just me? Did the bouncer, unprovoked, punch your friend too? Apparently, this is the only bar in salt lake where people aren’t allowed to ask why they are being denied entry, they’ll simply receive a concussion; given to them by none-other than the for-said bouncer; is this a place you would like to visit? Is it normal for a bar to encourage assault? Is it normal for a bar to lie to abused patrons? Is it okay for bouncers to grope and beat people who are trying to dance with their friends? Why do they laugh and accept anyone into this bar, regardless of age? Why do they employ known felons with violent records? Is it okay to have these people checking your friends, children, and loved-ones id’s?This review comes from many different experiences that have had while attempting to dance with friends at this bar. These aren’t unique or uncommon experiences. Ask your friends, your kids, anyone you know who has been to this bar: “did you enjoy your time at shades on state”? Their answers will disgust you. I’m shocked this place has over three stars. It simply should be shut down.Shades on state, please close your doors for good.Sincerely, Andrew

this place isn't even last resort just go home. the bouncers are disgusting and will assault you if you even look at them the wrong way it gives a dark feeling even if you're outside the bar, they have a camera but it's turned off because the bouncers are abusive & in the wrong so there's a low chance of them actually getting caught. they let underaged kids go in, manager is short white blonde lady and has proven she has no "managing" skills, they are the opposite of safety I would steer clear of this place if you want a fun safe night out.

I never write bad reviews, even when I probably should, but this is the worst bar to go to in all of Utah. They hire a bunch of degenerate junkies as bouncers, who almost always seem intoxicated on the job and are incredibly aggressive. I have witnessed one assault and have had friends get assaulted as well. One of which occurred a few nights ago. My friend was told he wasn't allowed inside after letting in all of his friends, and when he stepped forward in confusion as to why he wasn't allowed inside, he was sucker punched and knocked unconscious. He received a concussion and still looks like a bloody mess. I have also witnessed several underage drinkers getting hammered inside and showing off how bad their fake ID was. They primarily let in underage girls, and I've witnessed the bouncers not even care to look at their ID's. Once, a bouncer told me my ID was the most real ID he'd seen in the line, and I was dumbfounded that he would admit that he's practically purposeless. I am in awe that this place is still able to operate. They have a camera above the doorway, but it is never on, and I think it's because they know they are breaking the law regularly. The drinks are overpriced, and the food is disgusting. The only good thing about this place is the unique couches they have everywhere, but the couches seem very used and gross. The manager is some blonde girl who hits her vape 20 times a minute and serves no purpose. Do not go to this establishment. I promise it is not worth the trouble.

If i could review this place with ZERO STARS i would. The door guy is awful, i'm not even sure how him and the main manager have a job or how this place even has customers, every aspect of this place is so beyond poor i don't even have the words for it. Food, Nasty Service, shitty as fuck Ambiance, there is none the vibes are terrible you are better off going to a nasty ass public restroom and drinking a beer in there than you are here at least you wouldn't be bothered by a rude bouncer and a bar manager that doesn't have the qualifications for a simple job if you want to ruin your whole night and have a terrible night out this is the place for you!!
