I went to this restaurant for the first time. No expectations before I entered. Ambience was ok. You have to preorder and pay for the foods before it comes to the table. As for the food, we had dosas and briyanis. All the food came out piping hot, fresh and tasted good. As for the spice level, make sure to pick the lower level of spicy - even the medium one was very spicy for us. All in our group enjoyed the food which is the important thing at the end. Keep the same level up for future visits!

10/21/24 Updated review:

I finally returned here after they opened up 8 months ago, my second visit. I can't say I was terribly impressed. We did come on a weekday for lunch, so understandably the place wasn't packed. I'm sure it gets packed on weeknights or Friday Saturday nights. The customer service was not that great, the guy behind the counter was mostly just standing there and not interacting much. He was also on his phone a lot, which I guess makes sense since there weren't any other customers. Being that this was my first time actually dining in, I didn't realize that we had to order first and then take our food to the table. The guy working behind the counter didn't tell us that either when I asked him do we seat ourselves. When we placed the order with him, he didn't ask us if we want takeaway or dine-in. So when the food was served, the butter chicken and rice were served in two-go containers, while the puri and buttered naan were served on disposable plates. The food itself wasn't bad. Can't go terribly wrong with puri and buttered naan. We did ask for the spiciest level for the butter chicken, but it wasn't spicy at all. And the chicken itself was cut a little weird, like small little rectangular shapes. The booth that we originally sat down in looked a little roughed up, I'm not sure if they'll be addressing dad at some point. 'S. The women's bathroom had the wrong sign, "push" instead of "pull". I am glad that they had disposable plates and utensils. Would I return? Honestly, I'm not 100% sure I'd have to really be in the mood....

Review from 7 months ago :

This is located deep in Ashburn...Broadlands, where the old Malgudi Veg used to be. They currently dont have outside signage, but maybe it will be soon since today was just opening day.

They have a menu consisting of South Indian specialties, rice/noodle dishes, veg/non-veg entrees, desserts, etc.

The restaurant is very large with plenty of seating and elegantly decorated.

I ordered the vegetable dum biryani, which was only $13.99. They have different spice levels, Mild, medium, spicy. I arrived close to 10pm, but the kitchen was still open. I ordered mild, but for anyone who cannot handle spice, this would have been too spicy for them and it was very very heavy on pepper taste. I was kind of disappointed cuz there was barely any vegetables in there.

Before coming here, a Mediterranean restaurant from Fairfax was my worst food experience ever in USA. I'm surprised that Akshaya Patra replaced it.

My first visit was on opening day, had the worst experience, but I understood that they were busy, alot of crowd that day, it happens sometimes and gave another chance.

Today we ordered 2 appetizers, 2 biryani's and a pulav from non veg which was a complete disaster.
I haven't tried veg but my group did, so I can't leave a review on that.

I was shocked by the fry piece biryani as it was completely sweet, it's sweeter than a teriyaki.
Goat fry piece biryani was average, karimnagar pulav was better of all 3, pieces were better in that, only this saved me this day.

Coming to appetizers, out of two kaju vepudu was very better comparatively, but chicken sukka was so bad that one of group even spit that out(maybe because of the piece she had) but collectively everyone's thought was the chicken pieces are cooked but felt like they are raw at the same time, additionally it was like chicken pieces were taken out of a curry.

Anyone from our group didn't give any review over there because we were trying to have a good time with a birthday celebration. I was even glad that Akshaya Patra offered us some complimentary snacks everyone enjoyed punugulu maybe because of experience we were having at the same everyone left pakora because it was salty.

Overall take on Chicken was that it was cooked and soft but it felt somewhere between raw and cooked while eating, I'm not an expert but might due to making process.

I was happy to try today after my first experience but never coming back again. I think it's same with everyone in my group from what they shared with me about their experience.

I would like Akshaya Patra to take it as a suggestion and try to improve.

I recently visited Akshaya Patra Restaurant during their Dosa Night, the atmosphere was warm and inviting with friendly staff who made sure we had everything we needed. The attention to detail in both the food and service made the evening special.
If you’re a fan of dosa or simple looking to try something new, I highly recommend visiting Akshaya Patra.

We were there on week days for dine in and ordered 2 plain dosas and there were hardly 5 tables dine in already. It took my order for 1 hour annd I was patiently waiting but then I started asking multiple time on the order and as soon as I ask person disappear and another person come from the inside. After an hour my husband lost the patience and got angry while inquired about the order status and even at that moment their staff were fumbling around.
They were short staffed. Two persons were running inside and outside of kitchen and on the order counter. Their phone keep ringing and no one to answer. One of worst and poor service.

Finally, our dine in order converted into to go and he refunded money but we were not there for free food so my husband paid back in cash. But all this trouble when you have a baby and toddler and you’re hungry waited for an hour to dine in and finally ended up to go.

I won’t recommend this place. DONT GO….STAY AWAY!!!!
