I am the biggest Mexican food snob. Growing up in Mexico I can assure ypu I can assure you I i iw my authentic Mexican food. Mind you these are simple dishes like tacos, tortas, sopes, enchiladas, etc.. However when a place like El Comalito perfects it and does it all fresh and tortillas by hand, Wuuut???? I travel all over this country and try all thre mexican restaurants and let me tell you this is the spot. Simple menu not a five to six page pretentious menu. Other places take notes. Thank you for the amazing food and service. If you are in Charlottesville VA this is the spot. I assure you when I am any where close by I will be here to eat.P.S.Mind the heavy door.Jessie

The food was bland, it tasted like it just came out of the microwave. Worst michelada ever!, also my wife couldn't sleep that night due to stomachache.

THE EMPANADAS SLAP. I’m originally from out of town and I’ve been searching all over Charlottesville for a dish called Quesadillas Fritas. I came to this restaurant and got the chicken empanadas with cheese for takeout, and it was exactly what I’d been searching all over Cville for. I will certainly be coming back regularly from now on! (I wish I had a photo but I ate them all so quick ?)

Really great Mexican food - the empanadas specifically are incredibly light, crisp and flavorful. I love their salsa and guacamole as well. Enchiladas are super and the red and green sauces you can tell are made fresh, super herbaceous and delicious. Happy to see this place getting busier and busier, 100% deserved and hope this means they’re here for good.Vegetarian options: You can get almost any of their dishes with just cheese, mushrooms or vegetarian (veggies) options as fillings.Dietary restrictions: Gluten free dream, almost everything outside the sandwich are made with corn tortillas.

Do not ignore this wonderful place just because it is attached to a gas station! Their food is absolutely excellent and the dining room is comfortable. Frozen margaritas were so fun, sopes for the kids, fried plantains, enchiladas, and more! Really, so so good!Kid-friendliness: Great kid-friendly options and a dining room with lots of room for energetic kids.

I went there for the first time, and probably the last one, service is awful, slow and they messed up my order. I ordered let’s say “x+y” I was given just “y”, and after waiting almost 30 min. I grabbed my food to go, I checked and “x” was missing. So I told the cashier that my order was wrong, she stated that she didn’t recall of me telling specifically asking for “x + y”, which I did. COSTUMER SERVICE IS AWFUL! Cashier is rude.

This Mexican Eatery is legit. You definitely want to stop here for tacos, burritos, gorditas, quesadillas, etc. I've been to some of the other Taco places around Cville, and they don't compare. It might not look like much outside, but Inside is as authentic as it gets. My gorditas and quesadilla was awesome. All their food uses hand made corn Tortillas and they are cooked perfectly. Everything has good seasoning and was easy to eat. It wasn't expensive either. About 30-40$ for two people. Dont get Mexican food anywhere else.

Came in around 3pm on a Sunday and was surprised to see how packed this place was. We managed to get a table outside, but after waiting for 45 minutes for our food, we were getting really hot sitting in the sun and decided to leave. As we were checking out and paying for our drinks, which was all we ended up having, it also seemed like our order was NOWHERE near the front of the queue, so we probably would have been waiting at least another half hour. I mean.... seriously?During our wait, nobody came out to explain or apologize about the extended wait, and there were people who had been there before us who hadn't gotten their food either. It really seemed like only 25% of the packed restaurant had anything to eat, and nothing was coming out of the kitchen. I'm wondering if the crowd had been there since lunch and was still waiting on their orders. Most of the other patrons seemed like regulars who were used to the extensive wait, so I have to believe the food is good and worth it, but I guess I'll never know.Even if the food had been amazing, I truly just don't really understand how they are operating as a restaurant. I get that the food is handmade, but is there zero prep work done to make things flow out of the kitchen faster? It's not like they had a really extensive menu, either. And if you're not able to serve customers and turn the tables around, how are you making a profit? And if you're going to make customers wait an hour for food, at least let them know, or provide chips and salsa while they wait...
