“I entered the University Café expecting chaos, but the restaurant was pristine. A group of prawns scurried out of the gleaming kitchen, cackling among themselves. A handsome rat in a bow tie placed a starched napkin on my lap. I was seated next to two older gentlemen who sustained a witty repartee, critiquing every dish that they were served. “It’s not half bad,” one said. “Nope, it’s all bad!” replied the other. They laughed. Apparently, they are here every night.I heard the chef before I saw him. Loud bangs, crashes, and moos peppered the haughty murmurings of the upscale dining room—no doubt contributing to the proprietor’s mystique. A swordfish sailed past my head and smacked clumsily against the wall. “Herdy come da fishy wishy!” Our chef had arrived. Each night, the University Café offers a fixed menu featuring a wide range of items. On the evening that I visited, dishes included Chicky Catchy Turdi, Bork Chops, and a specialty item that is listed on the menu solely as a photograph of the chef, trapped inside a lobster pot. There are no prices, only pictures of the many feats of Hampton University’s sophistication, feats that dismantled the performance of traditional fine dining. Truly delighting. Eloquent. Amazing.“

“I was vacillating between 4 and 5 stars for this latest restaurant offering from the company that brought Mango Mangeaux a block down the street. I went with 4 stars this time but could be inspired to bump it up next visit. This eatery is open very reduced hours, Thursday thru Sunday from 1130am to 5pm. We got there at noon and followed a large group in the door. None of us were sure where to go exactly, but had I not been stuck behind them it would have been easy to figure out. Basically there is a large, beautifully appointed dining space with lots of seating configurations. This is not an all you can eat buffet. This is a cafeteria. Everything is a la carte. You approach the glass food cases, grab a tray and silverware and wait for one of the staff to offer you your choice of salads - I saw a pasta salad, fresh fruit, and the fixin's for a tossed green salad. We opted for the fruit salad and the tossed green salad. Then we approached the entree case where I spied liver and onions, meatloaf, baked chicken and some other offerings. The special of the day was a mango sauce pork chop. My friend opted for the pork chop and I got the liver and onions. The liver portion was huge - two large pieces of liver which was very tender and tasty. My granddaughter got the mac and cheese which appeared to be very cheesy and of the homemade variety. She ate all of her fresh fruit and some of the mac and cheese, which is more than she has eaten most places we go. I did not get any food photos as I forgot until we were well into our meals. There were some bread options including corn bread muffins. I got one that came with a small dollop of butter and it was sweet but not anything special. There was only one dessert option that I saw that looked like sweet potato pie and we passed on it. Drink options include sweet tea and mango lemonade. I would love if they offered the mango iced tea they have down the street. I did not see unsweet tea which is my drink of choice. Now to the reason I went with 4 stars. I had no idea what I was getting, what came with it, and how much it was. I paid for the pork chop, liver, salad, fruit, corn muffin, mac and cheese and 2 drinks and it came to about $35. That seems very reasonable and certainly not shocking. But I could not tell what the offerings were as they were not labelled, I did not know what came with sides and what didn't, and after the fact I noticed a very small sign about a children's meal, and found out it is spaghetti, bread and a drink for $4.99. I would really like to have the various options clearly identified and know the prices. I believe prices are posted on very small signs but not in a way that caught my attention or made sense to me. I am just one of those people that likes to know what my options are and know what I'm spending. Call me quirky that way. Limited hours must meet some demographic they are hoping to reach, perhaps the Sunday after church crowd fits perfectly in those hours. Still, a cafeteria concept can work and fill a niche in the revitalization of downtown Phoebus. Depending how long the serving line gets, because standing in line is not how I like to spend my meal time, I would like to give this eatery another chance soon!“

“I always love Piccadilly after church on a Sunday. The line is long but it's always worth it. All of our food was hot and tasty. I normally get the hamburger steak but tried the fish stuffed with crab meat. It was okay but I think I will stick with the usual next time. You can never go wrong with many of the options here. There is something for everyone! Also - They offer military discount with valid ID Thank you so much Piccadilly!“
