Always a lovely visit! The wine is primo, the people are lovely, and the setting is serene. What more can you ask?
Lauren was amazing!! She is new to the winery, but gave us an amazing overview and let us ask any questions we desired. She was absolutely wonderful!!!!
We have been members for quite a bit now and I love Greenhill! We live in Arlington which can get busy and loud, and this winery is an escape for us and that is made possible with their nobody under 21 policy. This place is also dog friendly outdoors which is awesome! The staff is friendly and recognizes us when we come in and greets us. The complimentary tasting is great because wines taste different depending on the year. You can do a tasting and after get a glass a wine so you don't have any surprises when it comes to taste. The bathroom is always clean and has burning candles which is a nice touch. I love their wine and I think that the price point is fair especially if you are enjoying the wine at the winery. The view is stunning, it's quiet, large outdoor space, food is available to order, nobody under 21and they limit parties of 10+.
Most of the negative reviews on here are because of the nobody under 21 rule. I find that odd since there is signage all over the property, it is on their website and on their socials. It's also common for wineries to have this in place. Some complain about the 10+ rule which is also on their website and socials. Most places that are not huge chains have that in place as well to assure that they have appropriate staff and space. Some are about bad recommendations which is also odd because everyone has different preferences when it comes to wine and the staff has always helped me and offered to taste something when I am specific with what I am looking for.
Anyways, if you at least google the place you will see all that needs to be known and pictures of the venue. It's not a party/loud winery and its not a kids friendly winery. Which to me are selling points :)
What a fun winery. Our tasting was with Emma who was knowledgeable about the making of the wines and their grapes, but also very engaging. They have a great selection of wine with your traditional Virginia varieties, but also some creative blends. It is in a lovely pastoral setting. We left with a couple of bottles of wine and a candle. They have candles burning in the restrooms -such a nice touch- and bonus, you can buy them. We highly recommend stopping by if you are in the area. We will definitely return.
We visited Greenhill Winery this week and were very underwhelmed by the service and wines. Our server, Sara, seemed annoyed that we were there. As she poured our tasting, she rattled off a pre memorized description of the wine as she quickly backed away from us for each wine. We wanted to ask more about the wines but she was at the other end of the bar before we could ask our question. Not very friendly. When we entered, we asked if we could taste at a table instead of standing at the bar. Her response was it was a ABC law she had to serve at the bar. As a person who has worked in the wine industry for may years and dealing with ABC regulations this was very inaccurate. The tasting room is a bonded area where wine can be served anywhere in that area. This may have been a winery rule but not a ABC law. She should have been honest to say it was a winery policy and not blame ABC.
The wines were ok but nothing that would draw us back to Greenhill. Especially the service we received. Knowing the previous owner and founder of the winery, Mrs. Sweedenburg would have been very disappointed in our experience.
The property is beautiful, the staff is friendly and welcoming, and wines and food like all vineyards change throughout the year. From year to year I have different favorites. That’s the way it is with all vineyards based on what is produced. It’s a farm and all crops change year to year. This winery has events once a month for members and they are always a call away for questions.
They do allow dogs outside on leash like most vineyards and they have some water bowls. No one under 21 is permitted and they signs all over before you walk in and around the inside tasting room. I’ve seen staff politely tell guest that come with kids and most understand and leave. There are always a few that act entitled and get an attitude and leave bad reviews for this. It’s everyone’s responsibility to check the rules each business has for guests before arriving, take responsibility and don’t blame a business for following the rules they established even when you get away with it from time to time. They do allow outside food as long as you are outside on the patio or at the picnic tables. The group limit is 9 and anything more requires a reservation in their group event space.
This is one of my top 5 vineyards in the area.
It’s 21+ but theres several signs posted. The grounds were stunning! All the staff were super friendly and helpful. And their wine was so tasty, we wound up taking some home with us. Would definitely return
Love the ability to bring my dog and the over 21 only setting. Beautiful property enhanced by the amazing staff and great environment!
For context, I’m 29 and visited this winery with my parents. As soon as we got out of the car, two staff members sitting at a table by the parking lot asked to see my ID. No problem; I showed them my ID and was let onto the property. When we stepped into the building, another set of staff members at the hostess stand said they needed to check my ID before I could enter. I complied even though I had just been carded. When we took a few more steps to the bar to order our wine, they stated they needed to see my ID AGAIN. I didn’t appreciate being carded three times in the span of 10 minutes, or the accusatory tone that was used by the staff as if I was underage. We visited two other (much nicer) Middleburg wineries that day, and I wasn’t carded once. At least give customers who appear younger a wristband or a hand stamp so that we don’t have to pull out our IDs at every turn.
Great stop off for a glass of wine, particularly Petit Manseng. They had a nice Christmas market with tasty cupcakes. Chill but gets busy.

good enough. did a tasting at the bar. enjoyed the christmas market. bought a great painting at the market. Wine was just okay. Service was just okay ...but long day for these guys.. nice atmosphere
Very off putting staff - we had 9 plus a driver sitting outside, we learned they have a policy for 10 or more, you must rent their private space. We were happy to ask our driver to wait in the vehicle to respect the policy, or break into two groups as there was ample seating available. The staff proceeded to tell us they would allow us to use the private room “just this one time if we promise to call in advance next time.” They repeated this several times. It was a bit confusing as we were perfectly happy sitting outside at one of the four available picnic tables. We were made to feel like an inconvenience when the staff really could have sold it as a “complimentary upgrade.” Simply poor customer service tactics, there won’t be a next time.
Poor atmosphere, overpriced, service was absolutely abysmal. Our bartender, Sarah, never bothered to make eye contact while serving us. Not the sort of place you’d want to spend any amount of time or money.
Unfortunately, this was not a good experience. Our server, Sarah, was extremely rude, would not talk to us, would not answer our questions, did not describe our wine, and was very off putting. We made the trip out with high hopes and left shocked by how rude she was.
Disappointing! :-(
We were hoping for a wonderful experience, but unfortunately it was anything but. The attendant/hostess seemed a bit too authoritative and somewhat abrupt. The tasting ($20) was totally unremarkable. None of the wines offered even warranted a second sip! I'm no wine authority, but I do know what I like. The wines seemed too "green" and immature; undeveloped. "Life is too short to drink bad wine." :-)
Our hostess was, IMO, inappropriately dressed for the position and her fingernails were short and dirty, which was extremely off-putting. As as first impression at a posh Middleburg location for a wine tasting, we were totally underwhelmed. Expected much better.
On a positive note however, the grounds and winery property itself were impressive. The Fall foliage and vineyards blanketing the rolling Virginia hills were spectacular!
