This was the worst restaurant experience I’ve had in quite some time - both food and service were very underwhelming. We almost immediately got our appetizers, but ended up waiting at least 50 more minutes for our entrees. We had a 5pm reservation and the restaurant was not busy, so we don’t know why the wait was so long.
We got two steak entrees (bistecca and beef Wellington) and did not receive steak knives. Our server also never came back, so we didn’t have the opportunity to ask for them. The beef Wellington was fraudulent. There was no duxelles, and instead it had what appeared to be canned mushrooms sitting on top. I am not convinced the steak itself was beef tenderloin; it was not very tender or flavorful. The potato purée that came with it was cold (not exaggerating - literally cold like it had been on the plate for 50 minutes waiting for the “beef wellington”), and the asparagus was overcooked. For the bistecca, the beef was cooked unevenly and the potatoes were burned.
In a positive note, the brussel sprouts and croquettes appetizers were really good, and the restaurant itself is beautiful. I’d walked by many times wanting to eat at Botanya, so it was a big letdown.

I love this place. Service is friendly and attentive. Interior is very cute and calming. Check out their weekend happy hour! Their clam and mussels dish is one of the best things I've ever had.

Intimate and sleek, Botanya makes the perfect date night location. The staff is efficient and personable without ever overstepping, dishes are made to perfection (their signature gnocchi a la Sinatra is a spicy twist on an old standby), and their mixology is spot-on. Well served by its location two blocks east of the massive free parking deck at the west end of Carytown, Botanya is the Italian restaurant that Richmond has needed--and lacked--for far too long.

We had lobster ravioli and their Frank Sinatra (noki/sausage)dish. Although the food was pretty good, I left hungry. There is also no bread given with dinner. We probably won’t go back.

This is a decent place! The food was good, not great. We got the pumpkin risotto, beef Wellington, meatballs, and prosciutto appetizer. Our favorite was the meatballs. Everything else was fine.
As for the service, everyone was wonderful. Very friendly and welcoming.
One small issue… they have three of the same painting on the same wall… not sure why but it seems like an odd choice to make.
I’m not sure we’ll go here again but it was nice to experience!

My first impression walking in was elegant decor with a high-end feel without being pretentious. Its intimate, but does not feel crowded or overly loud that you cant enjoy the atmosphere. I was alone and sat at the bar. I came for fancy cocktails and I was not disappointed. Sarah was great. She was great at listening to what I like and delivering even more. I enjoyed our chats around craft concoctions and trying her new dessert drink. I look forward to when she perfects the foam layer (latte 😀)
I was not hungry but enticed by the avocado pesto (they were out). Sarah sold me on trying the eggplant rollatini. The breading was cooked perfect, a light crunch not mushy. The capers also gave the dish a suprising zingy touch.
This place was a happy accident. I stumbled across it because the place I was going to was closed. It's definitely a place you should visit. I will visit every time I travel to Richmond. Thank you Sarah.

They were obviously having an off night when we visited for Happy Hour a few weeks ago. We arrived at 4:45 and there were only 2 other people in the restaurant. Yet we were told they could not seat us because they were understaffed and were only honoring reservations. After checking with manager they sat us after we said we'd be gone by 6. Ordered drinks and a few apps. One was 8 dollar Pizza Margarita which was literally 2 undersized slices. The other was the cheese balls which were really nothing more than an undersized version of 1970's fried mozzarella sticks.
Very disappointing.
I understand that the dinner service is where they shine but HH is meant to be a way to test out a restaurant, to entice us to come back. They failed in that regards.
It's always the owner/head honcho was bears the blame. If your staff isn't showing up for their shifts, if your appetizers are less than underwhelming, it's their fault- not your employees.
