For decades, Chez Max has been our go-to restaurant for special occasions. It is simply awesome.

I would not recommend this restaurant for any private parties or entire room rental. There will be limits on the service because you will likely only have one waiter for your entire party. I have had better experiences at other restaurants with private rooms.

Food, service, and wine recommendation was all excellent. Nice to be a quiet restaurant for a change (no loud music, no conversations echoing). Free glasses of champagne for my wife's birthday. And half-priced bottles of wine on Sundays. Win win all around.

Very bland food. Nothing to write home about, especially for the price.

This was our third visit to Chez Max. Service was wonderful, yet again, as was the food. We had lamb chops, filet mignon, the avocado and Brie, tuna tartare, and lastly the tart for dessert. Everything was delicious. Service was perfectly paced. They have a really nice selection of wines, as well. We enjoy the atmosphere- it's cozy and romantic but not cramped at all.

Absolutely delicious! Paired with a nice glass of wine. Will definitely be back.

Despite appearing to be short staffed, the service was excellent and professional. The food was excellent. Half-price wine (those under $150/bottle) on Sundays is a big attraction. The atmosphere is a bit fusty, but given the food and service, we'd go back. Loved sitting near the fireplace.

We “ate”dinner there on 2-17-24 I ordered the steak medium well done. (Barely any pink ) It came rare to medium rare with plenty of red. I had it sent back to be coked much more, not the case it was just barely medium rare all way through. I did not eat the rest. All the food was just average in taste and well over priced. It was the waiters “4 day there” and it showed he admitted he did not know anything about wines, and when the table next to us ordered the crapes he did understand it was on the menu. Our second round of drinks didn't arrive until after we had finished the meal. We were seated in the small “venue” room which was very quiet dimly lit by an outdated chandelier which had spider webs on it.. The decor in the whole place is stuck in the mid 1980's. Never eat there, we ended up stopping at a fast food restaurant for take out. Side note, as we were driving home we looked at other reviews posted here. Any negative reviews had a standard reply from the management, sorry hope you have a better time at some other Richmond restaurant WOW

We enjoyed the menu, food, and service at Chez Max last night. Wish it was closer to down town. Prices were reasonable considering the offerings. Half price bottles of wine on Sunday evenings.

We had an amazing time, as always. I highly recommend trying this gem. We started with the elle soup de crabe, split the rockfish special, and ended our evening with the cheesecake a la parisienne. We would normally take advantage of half price bottles of wine on Sundays, but we're in a martini mood. The drinks were fantastic as well. The service was impeccable. One of my favorite things about Chez Max is the ability to split an entree with a small fee to cover the extra sides du jour. Because we have that ability, we are able to enjoy an appetizer and dessert with our meal. Normally, we'd be too full for the multi-course restaurant experience. Already looking forward to my next visit!

Dover Sole is a must have in Richmond. Can't even find it elsewhere but it is a classic for a reason and Chez Max does it perfectly. Couple it with Roland's great service and a wonderful Cote de Rhône and you have a great meal. I left swearing to come back more often.

Overpriced, bland food. We won't return. We ordered the lamb chops, salmon stuffed with crab and dover sole. The fish entrees were very dry and lacking in flavor. I've had dover sole meuniere in many different restaurants and prepare it regularly in my own home; it's not too difficult to prepare. The pan side of my fillet was too tough to cut with a fork and the fish itself was very dry and flavorless. No lemon served or offered with the sole. Quite a disappointment at $54. The salmon was stuffed with crab that appeared to have been minced with a gelatinous greyish white sauce on top. My father stated that, while the portion size was large, the fish itself was very dry and he could not taste the crab at all. My mother indicated that her lamb chops were tasteless with minimal meat; she commented that the local butcher shop has higher quality chops. Very disappointing, overpriced meal. Service was adequate but nothing exceptional.

We dined here recently and once again experienced the hit and miss nature of the food here. Sometimes it is really good and other times not so good. This time our entrees were not so good. It's unfortunate because this is a really attractive restaurant with nice ambience. The service is usually good, if we could only say the same about the food.

Superb vibe as soon as we walked in. We were celebrating my wife's birthday. It was me, my wife, our son and his girlfriend. The staff is outstanding and the food per usual, was well presented and tasted scrumptious. What we really love about this restaurant is that they never try to rush you out the door. We are respectful of not overstaying our time but we always feel like we are truly welcomed. We only eat here once or twice a year as we live 40 minutes away but for a special occasion this is always one of our go-to restaurants in Central Virginia.
