I miss Citizen's breakfast burrito more than I can express in words. It was the best of the best. This was a great little place and will be missed by many.

The food is consistently good! Their soups are excellent. They are usually hearty, delicious and gluten-free. The homemade jams are unique and tasty. This is my favorite breakfast spot in downtown Richmond.

First time in Citizen for a quick work lunch with coworker. He recognized my preference for vegetarian options and made the suggestion. Cool little spot with a nice lunch menu. I had the falafel on pita with green salad. The falafel was great and the prep (Thai style) for the pita was so good - pickled cabbage, carrots & daikon radish with basil and cilantro chutney. Yes please! The side salad was tasty as well with a light house dressing. All the dishes come with a side and they all looked awesome - curried chickpeas, grits, fruit, lentils and feta, celery root slaw, sage white beans, etc.

Good prices, good food. Small place and food came out quick. Lots of options for plant based diets.

Lady and I had an appt nearby so we stopped in for brunch. Wow. Delicious flavors. Very generous portions. Coffee that is not burnt...you know how hard it is for most restaurants to have decent coffee? I had the Cajun eggs and catfish. This a stick to your bones all day kind of brunch. Paired really well with a bloody Mary. They also have homemade Tabasco sauce which is quite tasty. The eggs are underneath a tomatoes based vegetable mash. The catfish is fried perfect while thin, it's what you need for brunch and booze. Also comes with toast, jam and butter. Aling with a side, which I chose this time the grits. Very good. The ambience is right by the capitol so bit tough to find parking. They may have some parking arrangement but a walk by the capitol is nice on a bright and sunny Saturday. See ya soon!

Great place for breakfast. I had the pupusas and beet soup. Both were extremely delicious. The staff is very friendly and the vibe here is very cool. I'll definitely come back here again. The staff told me this gem of a place is shutting down in March, so eat up, people!

I arrived late morning to an empty restaurant and by noon every table was filled. No wonder - the food is so tasty, interesting, and fresh. I loved my Disco Eggs with the spices and sauces. I saw the person at the next table ordered it, too, and devoured it! Such a cool concept and unique menu. I can't wait to return.

Grabbed a quick lunch with my sister at Citizen, my first time there. The place was busy but we got seated right away. I got the pulled pork torta, the meat was made to perfection but just lacked some kind of sauce to really make your tastebuds pop! I got the side of curried chickpeas but instead got lentils which I ate anyway but it had way too much pepper. My sister ordered the Syrian chicken gyro which she loved and is her go to at Citizen!

Bustling downtown eatery that serves up a thoughtful menu and cheerful service. The vibe is casual, has an open clean floor plan, a sleek industrial feel and plays cool, ethereal music in the background, not that you can hear it too well. Boy, it can get loud due to the acoustics... I l literally heard several nearby patrons' conversations. Interesting as they were, talking about the economy, politics, holidays, real estate, notaries, house remodeling, etc., it was hard to concentrate on my own table. Is it eavesdropping if you're not trying to listen? I prefer a more cozy ambiance where I have a booth to deflect the sound and I can hear my table mates. Citizen's provides great service, I was quickly greeted and seated. I chose the window counter so I could enjoy the busy Main Street views. Throughout my visit, I was checked on to see if I needed anything else, and was brought another pot of hot water for my tea without asking... as a fellow Yelper reminded me: "you're always in hot water!" and yes I am! The tea here was a robust Harney & Sons English Breakfast. It would be nice to have a few more selections. The menu offered many unusual and creative meals... you'll find Spanish, creole, Mediterranean , Indian and country choices. I had the farm fresh eggs with grits and a biscuit with a side of fruit. The eggs were perfect! But for the rest of the meal... meh. The biscuit was dry, cold & chalky... the strawberry jam and butter buttons helped make it more palatable. Sadly, the grits were soupy but had a nice nutty texture. Some of the fruit in my fruit cup was mushy and had seen it's day, while other pieces weren't ripe. The prices weren't too tough of my purse so that a plus! I would give Citizen another try, maybe for lunch if I found myself in the neighborhood. But, I wouldn't go out of my way to come downtown for a meal here. I wanted to love this place, but I thought it was trendy and just average.

A small group of stopped in on a Saturday morning for breakfast... We were immediately greeted and since the place was packed, we had to wait, but we were offered coffee while we waited. The wait wasn't very long and then we were all able to sit together. This place has a VERY unique and interesting menu! They have a totally open/exposed kitchen and grill. They have some cocktails, featuring amazing Bloody Marys and Mimosas. Their food and their ingredients are very fresh and everything tasted amazing! Their prices are very nice, especially considering they come with a choice of sides. Their sides are very different and perfectly prepared. We tried several things, but the cumin potatoes were the best. They even have interesting homemade hot sauce! Their breakfast burrito I huge and nicely made... very flavorful! Service was great... very attentive and personable. Overall, we really enjoyed this visit and would highly suggest this place! Oh, and you can get your knives sharpened here too!

We had our firm Holiday party at Citizen last week. It was perfect. Warm, intimate ambience; large selection of excellent dishes; great choice of drinks; wonderful service. We have already reserved Citizen for the Friday evening before Christmas for next year. This place is a gem!
