This is easily my favorite Mexican restaurant in Richmond. Several of my older favorites have waned in quality over the last decade, but El Caporal has remained as delicious and consistent as ever.
I wonder if this is a more authentic experience than most Americans want; loud, cramped, and bussling, this place is an experience. But the food is good, if perhaps the fish tacos, one of our 3 dishes , was bland.
The medium sized margarita was giant and a fair price, and not too sweet. You can find better but you'll pay double.

The food was absolutely delicious! I had the enchiladas norteñas, the shredded pork was so soft and flavorful, I would order it again.
Our server was a bit distracted, always in a hurry, and seemed almost irritated by us. The restaurant is very small, and when busy as it was tonight, it is very loud and a bit overwhelming. If you have children with sensory issues I would avoid during peak business hours. We would eat there again, just maybe during lunch hours!
