I really rooted for this place and when I left a kind but honest review on google they replied by trashing WPA (the bakery that was there before them) and then told me I was lying about going to their bakery and that I was actually thinking about the old bakery that used to be there. I got the worst croissant ever here (really hard and chewy) and all they said was it was a bad batch... Idk I wouldn't charge people money for what was clearly a bad batch. Pretty disappointing experience, I used to go here a lot but the response to my feedback was so unprofessional and aggressive.

Their baked good hit the spot! From the scones to the quiche to the pepperoni rolls (on fridays), I love stopping by when I'm in the area!

Adorable little hole in the wall kind of place! You walk in and are greeted by wonderful smells and a super friendly staff. I picked up a pretzel, scone, and a cupcake and all were fantastic! Make the trip to Shockoe Bottom and visit these lovely folks!

The cakes I bought were delicious. So glad I found out through a friend about this place.

Perfect for a little morning treat. They keep their social media pages up to date with current offerings. They have daily specials - donuts on Wednesday, pretzels on Thursday, and kouign amanns on Saturday. Their pastries can sometimes be slightly dry. If any pastries are old, they are marked as such and sold at half price (although everything is already priced on the lower end). They also have dairy-free milk options and a pay-it-forward board! Masks are required and there are social distancing indicators on the floor. Street parking is easy to find.

we stopped in here for the first time today and the donuts were great. i will say, they were expensive, but i understand local businesses have to make money. we’ll definitely be going back now and then.

Update: I want to clarify that I have never been to the WPA church hill location before. I moved to this neighborhood in June of this year (almost a year after they closed). This place is very close to me and I used go often as I recently moved to this area. Generally, I find that I enjoy most of their baked goods and the coffee beans we bought from them. However, I bought a croissant a while ago that really threw me off — it was simply not like a croissant at all and was hard and chewy. As someone who loves croissants it was a big let down and I have been more selective of when I go/what I get from JJ’s since then. Their cheesecake and quiches are consistently great though. I would say that another reason I am giving 3 stars (I wish I could do 3.5 instead) is the overall presentation of goods in the store and consistency in quality. I find that while usually the flavors are there, the presentation is lackluster both in person and online. I really believe this place could be great with better in-house presentation and online presence. I’m posting this to give some honest feedback because I really do believe in this place and feel that they have a lot of potential to grow.

Words will always fail to capture the sublime and transcendent things that happen when you eat pastries from this bakery. I'm not even kidding.
