Top tier food for a great price. Highly recommend! Also the servings are literally perfect.

This place has been closed during the pandemic but I am eager for them to open back up as I live close by and frequent it regularly. It appears they have been doing some interior work, which was much needed as it felt dark and dingy before. The food here is 5/5, I have never had a bad meal and am now stuck on the eggplant parmesan. The service is not the best, which I understand is there schtick, but to me is just an excuse for the staff to not have to do their jobs better. I only tolerate it because the food is so delicious.

First the only negative; the wait for a table.. Think Yogi Berra; "Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded." Once you are seated you will experience some of the best food in Richmod. Creative and well prepared recipes. inventive combinartions of meats, seafood veggies and salads. Classic Italian dishes are a specialty. Desserts to share a must do to end a delicious dinner. Amazing what they do with pastas. You will return and stand in line again.

Great Richmond staple. Nice staff and great wait staff. Super loud, and super busy place! Very dated and old, but that's what adds to it's charm. The food is traditional Italian / American and the portion sizes are respectable. Not the best place for a first date, only because how loud it can be when they get busy.

If you want genuine Italian food , try Mamma Zu’s. There is plenty of garlic , so make sure you like garlic. Best eggplant Parmesan ever. Pastas are amazing.

This Italian restaurant was a delicious hole in the wall. I loved the family style service. I highly recommend the pasta, and the squid salad. I don’t even like tiramisu and it was good. We loved these two bottles of red wine.

The veal marsala here is exquisite. It is truly divine. A life changing experience.

Went to Mamma Zu last Thursday night for a date night. Great little spot. Classic RVA hole in the wall eatery that is often overseen by visitors. I would recommend this spot over many of the other mainstream restaurants in the area. Great food. It is a tight space but make yourself comfortable and enjoy the vibes with friends or your partner. The tiramisu is to die for and a dessert you do not want to miss out on!!!

Came here for my birthday. My husband knew I wanted to try Mamma Zu’s after hearing about all the great reviews. We arrived early so we would get a table. When my husband called, the gentleman on the phone said it would be best to get here before 6pm to guarantee a seat. Since it was our first time we didn’t know what to expect. Our server was friendly enough but did not inform us of how service was done at Mamma Zu’s. We sat for a while before being served and had no idea about the menu on the chalkboard. After we were served our food we waited a while and had to get our server’s attention to order dessert. We also had to ask for our food that was boxed up. If I knew what to expect before coming I might feel differently but our server didn’t try to find out if this was our first visit. I could look past all of this if the food was spectacular. Both my entree and my husbands was not worth the price. We’re glad we tried Mamma Zu’s but will not be back. I hope if you do try this restaurant you have a better experience than we did.

Food was okay, service was not great. Main server yelled "STAND BY THE DOOR" when I entered and was visibly upset then was not happy we were in the way of the entrance. Awkward space, no menus (its on the wall in chalk behind a counter, you have to stand to read it). This place was recommended by a local, not sure if I would go out of my way again to eat here. I will say the portion size was good!

Liked the intimate, family-like atmosphere and loved the authentic Italian cuisine, especially the pasta dishes and the red sauce! Food combined with the house red wine in short glasses reminded me of Europe and made this a memorable Italian family restaurant experience in Richmond! Will definitely come again!

Mad Dog

Still one of my favorite restaurants anywhere. The sweetbreads are incredible!
