I ordered a hot fudge sundae. Kinda felt bad to have hot fudge drizzled over such delicious ice-cream but I love chocolate. Let me tell you...the hot fudge was sooo good. The sundae tasted and felt like love on a spoon!!! Found out Ruby the owner actually makes it herself. She was also such a delight and inspiration.

While I stand by the comments I made earlier on Ruby Scoops’ flavor profiles, I feel as though I let my personal desire for weirder flavors get in the way of appreciating other qualities of their ice cream. It has a stretchy, almost taffy-like stretch pull to it, which is not only delightfully playful, but is also my preferred textural style for ice cream. Were I a fan of more traditional flavors, I could easily see myself considering Ruby Scoops one of my favorite shops in town, especially considering the rather substantial attention and real estate paid to vegan flavors (nearly half!).

Old Review:
Adorable building! I wish they committed to their novelty flavors more - I could not taste the red bean, the miso, nor the old bay in their red bean strawberry, miso butterscotch, and old bay caramel corn flavors respectively. In attempting to appeal to adventurous palettes with the flavor combinations, but simultaneously appease customers who prefer more standard flavors profiles in the recipes themselves, they have alienated both categories of consumer (which I, being the adventurous eater, take especial offense to). I’m guessing that their R&D would hugely benefit from a bigger budget, longer development periods, and more involvement from all levels of staff. Moreover, I’m almost certain that any complaints a customer could levy against a specific ice cream flavor is being echoed by the employees themselves, so I’m choosing to blame management/ownership! Ruby Scoops’ products are otherwise perfectly serviceable if you happen to be in the area, and Northside should be proud to have them.

Make haste! Ruby Scoops has the best flavors! Their Hot Honey Cornbread ice cream, vegan, gluten-free & dairy free frozen delights are delicious! They offer shakes, sundaes, scoops, cones-even gluten-free cones. It's a bright cheery space with tables & high tops.

Best ice cream in RVA! I love the seasonal flavors. Rabia is so creative with her ice cream selections. Her Ube, Strawberry Yum Yum, Hot honey cornbread and mango sorbet are my favorites! It’s almost Halloween so, I’m looking forward to her “spooky” scoops! If you’re in the mood for really good ice cream, do yourself a favor and pop into the shop! She also does New Orleans style snowballs!

This is my absolute favorite ice cream in the entire city. I haven't had a single thing that I don't like. The creativity is unmatched! She won the Ben & Jerry's ice cream competition for a reason! The handmade cones are perfection and the cookies are a wonderful thing to grab for later. I love to see this place in the neighborhood I love and grew up in.

Literally the best scoop shop I’ve ever been to- not only in RVA, but anywhere. Not only are the scoops inventive and culturally significant, but the textures and flavors are spot on consistent and that says heaps considering most in-house ice cream places have a hard time finding consistency.

When you go- try something seasonal, but don’t skip on the main flavors. My favorites are hot-honey cornbread, ube, and strawberry yum-yum. Get the miso caramel too. You’re not going to be disappointed.

Every time I head to NC from MD, we stop at Ruby scoops on the way down and back. The ice cream flavors are delicious and I love their super cute merch! There is NOTHING like their Hot Honey Cornbread.

We love this ice cream shop! I cannot do dairy ice cream, so I love that they have more than 1 flavor that is non-dairy. The staff and owners are awesome as well.
