I had the caesar salad …very good. The entrée was the chicken dinner….served cold and a cold plate. The server took it back to the kitchen and in a few minutes brought it back out….also cold….they asked if I wanted anything else…however the rest of the party would be finished by the time another entree was brought out. Food that should be served hot should never leave the kitchen cold! Another person in the party also had cold scallops…

I cannot say enough good things about this place. I went to the soft opening and it was just amazing but now the food is even better!! unique combination, southern cuisine, and New World fusion! So yummy.

My wife and I have been to Shagbark several times. My wife’s company had their office holiday party there in 2023 and I also attended. Thus, I am rating on experience.Dissatisfied and disappointed. The service was rushed and for a $250 dinner for two joined by another couple for a $250 dinner for two, I feel obligated to share the experience. The waitress came across to the two ladies in our 4 top as she was indifferent and as cold as our filets. The filet minion oscar special was not what a $46 should entree should entail. It was two thin slices of meat with no recognizable crab oscar.Using the operative word of ‘recognizable’ ……this was not the experience I am used to recognizing at Shagbark.

Shagbark always offers an amazing dining experience - the food is consistently delicious/well prepared by the chef and the service is impeccable! During one of my last experiences, the server Gregory, was exceptional. He came around to check on my table at the right time but not overbearing and was very personable and attentive. The bartender by the name of Miguel is amazing...great conversation and he definitely knows his bourbons! Overall service and experience are top-notch and the beautiful decor lends to Shagbark's upscale environment and soothing ambience.

The food by chef Walter is simply the best of Virginia Fare. Including the homemade bread selection that is perfectly paired with the a flavored freshly made butter is incredible. The atmosphere is sophisticated and alluring, and the taste thrills are just down right exciting. A must dine, while in RVA.

Gonna give it ?????! Best restaurant in RVA. I've been to almost all of them. This one is unique! Creative! Well done! Great menu: beer, wine, and cocktails! Food: unbelievable! Prices: extremely fair! I'll be back again! And not soon enough! Great Restaurant! Back again. Beth Anne is great at the bar. Best Fried Green Tomatoes and again the weekly chicken fried oysters are amazing! Back again the Porkchop wow! And Taylor was a great waiter. He knows the menu and made great recommendations. I came back again. Taylor again was great. Derek the manager was awesome and as always Walter Bundy makes it all happen. Still my #1 pick in RVA! Back again and still #1. And kudos to Desiree at bar.Back again with a large group of customers. Couldn't have been treated any better! Again this is a great place! Hands down! Best in RVA! BBack again in February 2024 and this place is still the best I've found in RVA. Top Notch!

I will say that I personally love this location, and all of their selections that they have to offer. I've been here for birthdays, anniversaries, and a few other special occasions. The staff is some of my favorites in town, and they're on the same level as locations such as: Bookbinders, The Tobacco Company, and The Roosevelt in terms of staff attention and quality of food. The price point is actually extremely approachable. Two apps, two entrees, and a couple drinks only ran myself and my lady about $100 on an anniversary dinner, which for the quality, it just couldn't be beat! If you're looking for Michelin Star quality food in a place right here in town, I'd say this would definitely be in my top five list. Having had the chance to travel this country with almost the soul reason being food and drink, I don't feel I need to travel as much with these being the options. The only real complaint would be that it does feel a little too 'masculine' in some places. Mounted trophies of hunted animals seems a little out of place, and the Men's restroom is covered head to floor in pictures of what I assume to be family of the restaurant out hunting, posing with their kills. This is jarring, especially when compared to the ambiance and decor of the rest of the location. Atmosphere gets bumped down a little for this, as it did take away some of my desires to continue my meal, but those were quickly abated when our staff came back to greet us at the table.Bonus: You can get a peek at the kitchen if you just walk a little down the hallway, super cool to see a staff actually at work in the BoH, and it put a huge smile on my face. I'll always go back, even with the small bump for Men's restroom decorations. 6/5 for everything else. Special notes for Servers and Bartenders, they care beyond most others you'll find in town, especially for the price point.

My wife and I took her family to Shagbark during the week between Christmas and New Years as part of a tour through Richmond - a city we love but they've never spent much time in. Because we really wanted to make an awesome impression, we made reservations at great restaurants and planned fun experiences - really hoping everything would be exceptional.Shagbark may have great reviews and might be highly-recommended by some...but it was a giant black mark on the entire trip we planned for our family. While the restaurant is gorgeous and the service is attentive, the food was simply unacceptable for the prices. Dishes were under seasoned, poorly conceptualized, or just poorly executed. Almost everything after the appetizers that hit the table had something wrong with it:Rockfish: Seasoned so poorly that we had to request a salt and pepper shaker and go to town to make it palatable.Duck breast: A poor sear left unrendered fat and rubbery skin that was completely unappetizing. This shouldn't even be on the menu if the kitchen can't render the fat and get the skin crispy on the duck breast...and they're charging $42 for it.Venison bolognese: This was an actual dumpster fire. The sauce was under seasoned to start, and then topped with a giant scoop of flavorless ricotta which just muted the flavors even more and made the consistency of the sauce unnecessarily creamy. They placed large, hamfistedly-halved "confit" tomatoes on top, which added nothing to the dish except the need to awkwardly slice up your own tomatoes in a vessel that clearly wasn't designed for slicing. The pearl onions were hard and raw and added nothing but an off-putting raw onion flavor. This was the dish I was most excited about based on its description, and it was a flavorless, muddled, chunky disaster - topped with a thin, burnt slice of bread for...reasons?Chicken breast: The first dish we sampled that actually had flavor - but also a strange personality disorder. The romesco sauce tasted like BBQ sauce - which would be awesome with the chicken, alone, but didn't really work with the gnocchi at all. Also, the ratio of mushrooms to gnocchi was skewed with far too many mushrooms. At least the chicken was well-seasoned and flavorful - the first protein that we received that was both cooked well and seasoned well.I was truly shocked at the food that we were served. Every dish had a mistake in execution or simply didn't taste good. The overall feeling that I got from Shagbark is that producing solid, flavorful food that people want to eat seems to have taken a backseat to creating heaping, convoluted, intricately-plated dishes that look impressive but aren't cooked properly, seasoned well, or well conceptualized.Considering the prices, we could have gotten much better food at other restaurants in Richmond (a place like L'Opposum) and have been much happier. The ingredients on the dish might justify the menu prices, but the flavors and quality of the preparation certainly don't...things were just "meh" or downright bad across the board. We left embarrassed for choosing a restaurant that was both bad AND incredibly expensive. Avoid making the same mistake and go anywhere else!

This is more than just dinner out, it's an experience. From beginning to end, it was superb. The waitress was helpful and attentive. The food is some of the best I've tasted and the portions are plenty. It is pricey, but for a special occasion it's a great choice. Looking forward to dining there again.

Outstanding culinary experience. The four of us ordered different entrees and shared. The wine list is extensive. Unless a sommelier is available, look to the specials and the wine recommendations. Chef isn't going to publish a menu with a bad wine. Each dish, from appetizers to desert, was excellent. Servings were ample and the deserts so good there was be room for some. Our server was knowledgeable, efficient and friendly. We were not rushed at all. Pricey but worth it.

I enjoyed the food (the Pork dish), the ambiance and the summer old fashion cocktail. I forgot the name of the bartender who served me ( Miguel? I think), he was super cool. Definitely will be dining there again when in town.
