THIS is a proper Irish pub. there's a real air of comraderie here.the crowd varies by time of year and days. if you're older and want a slower pace: avoid evenings of weekends here. they're next to Seattle University and attract younger clientele during those hours. they're incredible people here. become a regular. this is a close knit joint when you stick around as a local.
Food is good, drinks are *usually* good. I usually go to The Chieftan after Mass or after work, and usually even when it's busy the service is fantastic. Been going for years now and never had an issue.
Last time I went though, my Guinness was improperly poured, in the wrong glass, and when I went to use the restroom the fella that had served me and mine our drinks didn't wash his hands.

I don't know if it's the owner or just the manager, but I get the worst service every time, wait like 5 mins to get a drink. The vibe is pretty chill and they got free pool
