I have been to Shinsen 2 times over the last 2 years & there is a reason to keep coming back. Excellent location, service, & of course, sushi. I went solo the first time & had a blast with the chef behind the bar
The 2nd time, I was stuck in Portland traffic at 5:30 pm, and called ahead for a table for 10 at 6:30. The team was able to accommodate & provided a wonderful evening for the party. I had miso soup & the chef special which was delicious. Everyone enjoyed the drinks & especially edamame. A great time was had by all with our server Mya being the absolute greatest. Thank you again for making a wonderful night occur and bringing a smile onto so many of my co workers faces!

It was our first time. We will go back
Not a place I will return to. Here they serve quantity not quality. Service was poor, clearing the table with food still on it. Had to tell them to wait. And it was the owner too. Speedy es well.

Really nice spot in the new waterfront area. Prices are slightly higher, but the staff was nice, sushi tasted great. I got the special “pacific roll” which was $29, but filled me up. Also tried the 2pc otoro tuna which was great, but expensive ($15 for 2 pieces). Sushi bar service was great and the waiters were friendly

Wow!!! Truly unforgettable experience the type that makes you want to go back even if you’re not debating sushi bc the team is so good. Amelia, maya, daniel, dennis, everyone sorry if I didn’t include your name was above and beyond. Not to mention amelia and maya are so brogue they deserve to be on the ads or something being their face justice!!! 10/10 experience

The worst service ever.
Waited 10 minutes with no one in front of us before anyone paid attention to us - only to be told we couldn’t be seated - 90 minutes before closing. I guess they don’t want to grow their business.

Rolls were cut way too big. It is not enjoyable to eat where you think you will choke. Rolls also have no special quality. I have ate tons of sushi in my life and this is underwhelming.

Staff made for a wonderful night, especially Amelia. Thank you all from Hostess and Chefs to making Feb 4th a special night!

This has become my go-to sushi spot over others in the area because the fish quality is so good, the ambience elevated and cozy, and their unique rolls are delicious. Service staff are always friendly and welcoming.
My overall experience here was really enjoyable. The staff was friendly and attentive and the food was great. I had a variety of sushi rolls and everything tasted well prepared and thoughtfully made. The Amelia was hands down my favorite drink (if you like tequila). You can tell that a lot of care goes into both the food and the drinks here. If you're looking for high quality sushi and great drinks with friendly service ShinSen Sushi & Lounge is definitely worth checking out.

I’ve eaten sashimi for most of my life - across hundreds of casual spots and high-end counters, in both the U.S. and Japan. The style and creativity of an itamae (板前) (sushi chef) can vary, but one thing doesn’t: sashimi is a craft built on meticulous preparation and care.
Tonight, on a Saturday dinner service, I experienced something I have never encountered before: a bone left in a piece of salmon toro sashimi.
To be clear, I understand fish have pin bones. The issue isn’t that bones exist - it’s that a restaurant charging premium prices served sashimi with one still in it. That’s not a “whoops,” it’s a basic quality-control miss and a potential choking hazard. At this level, precision is the minimum standard.
The front-of-house staff handled it politely and was receptive when I showed them the bone, and I appreciate that. But what disappointed me most was the complete lack of accountability from the kitchen. No chef came out to acknowledge what happened, inspect the issue, or offer a direct apology - just a small discount through the server.
And that’s where this feels especially out of step: Japanese culinary culture isn’t just about the food - it’s about pride in the craft, humility, and ownership when something falls short. If you’re presenting this as an upscale sushi experience, the expectation is not only excellent ingredients, but the level of care and accountability that traditionally comes with it. Tonight missed that mark in a way that’s frankly insulting for a restaurant positioning itself at this caliber.

Our server went above to deliver us an amazing experience, including a delicious mocktail and zero proof beer for Dry January. The rolls are much bigger than most and you can taste the quality!
You won’t find spicy mayo on these rolls, just delicious rice and fish. It did take a bit long to get everything to come out so take that into consideration if you are in a rush or very hungry :) it was worth every bite!
