“We stayed at the hotel this past weekend. We loved the place. It is so quaint, and peaceful, and the owners are very pleasant. The bar is unique. The owners are doing a lot of work to update the place and I will no doubt stay there again the next time I am out that way.“

“Stopped in for lunch today, first time visitors. We were so impressed with the place, clean, friendly staff and good food. We started with the pretzel bites and beer cheese. They were awesome, crisp on the outside and really soft inside. Diane was our server and she was training JD. They both came to our table several times to check on our food order and drinks. We will definitely be back. Happy holidays to the entire crew at Turtle Pond Tavern-Santa“

“This place is the epitome of a hidden gem, in almost a literal sense given its lack of external signage! My partner and I were on our way back from visiting family in the northwest corner of the state, and found ourselves stranded far from home when their alternator cut out mid-drive. We coasted into Hixton as the motor died, and after getting as settled as we could at the motel post-tow, we set out on foot along the highway on a hunt for an alternative food source from the gas station. 20 minutes later, we apprehensively arrived at the Brookside Tavern, and upon opening the door, I realized it was clearly the kind of place that didn't often see a lot of non-regular patrons, let alone young queer couples from Madison. But I don't think that part was on the forefront of the staff or patrons' minds - I think once I opened my mouth, they just saw us as a young couple in a bad situation who needed some warm food and kindness, which we received plentifully. The staff had already shut off the grill given the hour on a Sunday night, but they reignited it just for us and brought us incredible burgers, fries, and generously poured drinks, all for prices I hadn't seen so low since childhood. Some folks at the bar even offered us a ride back to the motel so we didn't have to walk. We left with full stomachs and hearts - frankly, everyone's hospitality really restored my faith in humanity. I can't guarantee we'll be back in Hixton soon given the circumstances that brought us there, but if we ever find ourselves in the area again, we'll be sure to stop by.“

Mr Ed's Bar & Grill Bar • $

“Check your expectations at the door. We pulled over to grab some holiday liquor and some water for the road and got so much more. I can't speak for the restaurant, but the flea market finds were great. There are used DVDs galore, office supplies, tools, antiques, and liquidated name brand candy priced to fly out the door. We spent an hour in there and made three trips to the car with our finds. If flea markets aren't your scene, maybe you should skip this place. Mr. Ed was super nice and helpful, too.“
