If you’re looking for a great meal in La Crosse, Schmidty’s is a must. The fish sandwich was impressive; the cod fillets were sizable and the light, flaky batter was spot on. My wife loved the patty melt, which was served on a unique and flavorful pumpernickel swirl bread. Both meals came with excellent, crispy fries. What really made the experience, though, was the great service. A perfect lunch spot!
This was the first time we had been to Schmidtys since the new ownership took over. The wait was moderate- 20 minutes or so. Once we got a table, our waitress came over fairly quickly. She was very friendly. After we ordered dinner, we went to the salad bar. Not a great salad bar- everything was low or empty. My husband had the soup & said it was bland. It took a very long time to get our food & it was cold when we got it. We won’t be going back.
The batter fried fish was good-flaky not greasy. The broiled was served with a gray tint so a bit raw-which we returned-same plate was returned to us (entire plate was hot so the potato was probably microwaved before sending it back out to us). The broiled was returned to us cooked but it wasnt seasoned nor buttered much so it was bland.
The soup was also very bland, You couldn’t tell it was clam chowder by the taste.
