Was I pranked? I am seeing the word “authentic” in the other reviews and I am perplexed. Nothing about my experience was authentic. I am 90% sure the dan dan noodles used Buldak instant ramen hot sauce, and 95% sure the chicken was tossed in ketchup. 夫妻肺片 was totally off the mark. Just because it’s not the “orange chicken experience” doesn’t make it authentic. I would say the food is improvising with Sichuanese concepts but not good. The cooking has some major growing edges, but these reviews are an insult to Chinese cuisine.

If pork fried rice is considered as dim sum , then all Chinese takeout is dim sum restaurants. This place is not considered as dim sum restaurant unless you never tried dim sum before. This may be a faulty advertising.

Had a dinner for two. We thoroughly enjoyed the panko shrimp and squid (calamari). The garlic green beans were out of this world delicious. The spicy beef broth could've been spicier but was still good. The hot tea (peach oolong) was delightful. We finished with a unique and refreshing coconut dessert (pictured)!

I got the beef noodle soup, the chicken skewer special, and the scallion pancakes. Objectively food was pretty good, 7/10 for the skewers, 7.5/10 for the scallion pancake, and 7.8/10 for the beef noodle soup.
But the dish didn't taste authentic to me. The beef noodle soup tasted more like a tonkotsu ramen than a beef noodle soup. Even the color of the broth resembles it more. I came in expecting to get chinese beef noodle soup, so I was very disappointed. I wish the restaurant had hoisin sauce for the scallion pancakes as well.

Absolutely loved our first time at Hutong! Enjoyed two of the specials - pork bao buns and the lamb dan dan noodles. The server graciously warned me that the dan dan would be very spicy and I like spicy food so I appreciated the warning and can attest...it was very spicy and very good! The few cocktails and some small plates (garlic green beans, spring rolls, pot stickers) we had were also delicious. I feel like this is a hidden gem!

We can’t say enough about this spot! Gracious service, relaxed vibe, and very well prepared food. The menu’s not so extensive that you get lost. There are plenty of options for more and less adventurous palates. Small plates are the way to go IMO—the portions aren’t skimpy and you can try different things.

The food was amazing! We had the pork buns (a special), the cucumber salad, the green beans, sweet beef bowl and the pear tea. All were spot on with sauce and flavor, we could have ordered more green beans. Atmosphere was relaxing and our waitress was helpful and kind.

I got the pork fried rice, and it was delicious. It might be the best thing I've eaten here in Madison since I arrived last fall. The restaurant itself is beautiful too, both in the decorations and atmosphere. Do be aware that their menu isn't exactly what it is online, since it's based on ingredient availability, but if all their food is this good, I don't think it'll be a problem.

胡同 HuTong is absolute heaven. For a guy who studied and worked in Beijing for several years it was a treat beyond words to come here with a friend for dinner. The owners and staff are friendly and warm as if we were invited into their home for dinner. I will come here every opportunity I have.

Finally found a Chinese restaurant in Dane County that serves authentic dishes. Went with a friend who is a part-time chef of Chinese specialties hired by various bistros and who, like me, lived in China for many years. We were met by a friendly local woman who had studied Chinese in China and was warmly attentive. The decor is simple but genuine with a traditional Chinese bar. Very cozy place. The lady who is the co-owner came out to check on us, too. Their hand-pulled Sichuan dan dan noodles were delicious and better than any I've had elsewhere in the U.S. So, too, were the fried dumpling and cucumber appetizers. The dumplings were good but quite small. They offer a Uighur style lamb stew special which another customer said was delicious. This place deserves a devoted clientele. My friend and I vowed to return often to try other items on their adequate menu (it would be great if they served Beijing style boiled dumplings and more noodle dishes).

A group of us had dinner at Hutong last Sunday evening. I made reservations on-line. It's not a form, but instead it emails them, and they email you back. Easy enough and I made reservations for the outside patio which I didn't even realize existed from walking past the front. When our group arrived, we were promptly greeted and ushered to the patio area. (There are steps if that matters to you.) It's a really nice patio area. It felt nicely secluded with lovely decorations. They were short-staffed that evening, so our waitress was also the bartender, but she did a wonderful job of taking care of us.
My partner and I had the Scallion Pancakes which were light, not greasy, and had a delicious scallion flavor. We also ate the Crispy Squid with house-made pepper salt. I loved the squid which included several tentacle pieces. It came with a slightly spicy, salty sauce which paired marvelously. For entrees I had the DanDan noodles which our waitress warned us were spicy and they were, but I utterly loved them. My partner had the Braised Pork Rice and highly recommended it.
I had not been to Hutong before, but we'll definitely go back.

This is our first time eating out in Hutong. We ordered Dan Dan Noodles and Garlic green beans. Great food with great flavors and amazing taste! The Dan Dan Noodles are spicy. If I could rate the spice level 10 being max I would give them 7.5-8ish. I love spicy food so no complaints! Definitely cleared my sinuses. The green beans were nice & crunchy. Great appetizer or a small plate. Potion size was good. The menu is not overwhelmingly long like other Chinese restaurants so that's nice especially when it's difficult to decide what to order. I would definitely go back again to dine in there. It's nice to have a good & authentic Chinese restaurant in Madison without the need to travel to Chicago to satisfy your taste buds.

"Hutong" means an alleyway. This restaurant really isn't in an alleyway but the idea is to signify a small restaurant that you'd by happenstance. The outside is very nondescript but it is popping inside. Full tables with conversations in the air. The menu is small which is great. I find the giant Chinese menus to cause me paralysis by analysis. If you like spicy, get the DAN DAN noodles. The spicy beef noodle soup is also very good, and so is the garlic green beans. A glass of jasmine tea rounds out the meal. $60 with tips.
