Coffee Makes You Black is a delightful southern breakfast spot in Milwaukee, housed in a former bank building transformed into a light-filled space adorned with African art and tributes to black culture. This upbeat, black-owned business provides a refreshingly unpretentious atmosphere, where customers can enjoy soulful tunes and attentive service.
The menu offers a variety of classic southern dishes, including home fries, scrambled eggs, pancakes, catfish, and the customer favorite, shrimp and grits. One reviewer particularly enjoyed the "best catfish" they've ever had. The caramel ice mocha was also praised for its deliciousness.
Beyond the food, the restaurant's unique charm lies in the engaging interactions with the elderly host, who surprised guests with insightful descriptions of their personalities, aspirations, and preferences, leaving some to wonder if he possessed clairvoyant abilities. This unexpected encounter provided a welcome respite, allowing customers to immerse themselves in a moment of positive connection and intrigue.
Overall, Coffee Makes You Black is a testament to resilience and black entrepreneurship, offering a delightful dining experience that celebrates the richness of African-American culture.
