This is a difficult restaurant to review. The food is good basic Italian. The setting is amazing, particularly on a sunny summers evening.
Where everything falls apart is the style of service they offer. They have coined the term “Modern Service”. I would counter with “University Dorm Cafeteria Service”. Mattone Italian Kitchen is a family-operated restaurant that offers a variety of Italian dishes, including pasta, pizza, and gelato. The food is generally good, with a tasty sauce and a nice focaccia. The gelato and sorbet come in many flavors and are highly recommended. The staff is friendly and can assist in deciding on flavors. The pizza was excellent, and the Cioppino was excellent with a loved flavor background. Always get the tiramisu—one of the best things ever eaten!
The brunch menu consists of only five options. The interior of the restaurant is spotless and modern with a million-dollar ocean view, perfect for watching stormy skies clear. The patio is a perfect spot to sit. For dinner, the service is efficient; you scan a QR code to order and pay, and the food shows up quickly at your table. The spicy calamari is the best ever had with a real kick. The butternut squash ravioli was delicious. The room is beautiful and the owner is delightful and very involved.
Mattone also offers grab-and-go options for cooking at home and caters to dietary restrictions. The place gets packed early, so it is best to book a reservation a couple days in advance for weekend dining.
