Very disappointing! My mother and I read an online 5-star review posted just three months ago that this place had lots of variety, generous portions and was cheap. So since we were in the vicinity we decided to try it out.

A rinky dink place and no other customer was there even though you would expect peak lunch hour to be busy.

Fried rice was just fried rice with a little bit of chopped green onion, not at all appetizing, even though the woman serving there insisted we wouldn't be able to cook as nice at home -- really? Fried rice with nothing but bits of chopped green onion and hardly any? And then when we opted for white rice instead, she was so disparaging, said we were trying to save a dollar on rice because she charged an extra dollar for her fried rice!

Not much else for variety. Besides the rice, there was a pan of noodles all dried up from sitting there too long, one pan of eggplant (nothing else with it), a pan of beef and bell peppers, a pan of nappa cabbage and vermicelli, Szechuan bean curd with slivers of meat, and three dishes of the same breaded halibut cooked three different ways. Nothing else.

I have food sensitivities so there wasn't much I could choose from. So then the server suggested we take two of the same items of bean curd to make the combo -- wow, that's what you call a combo! We decided instead of a three-item combo, we settled for two: fish and beancurd, and of course the white rice, all for $9.50 plus GST.

As for the quantity that 5 star review claimed was so generous -- turns out the carton wasn't even full and most of it was the white rice. So not worth the raved review we read! Makes us suspect that the person giving the 5-star review was paid to make it sound better than it actually was.

Originally, we thought to buy some frozen foods to take with us to cook at home: dumplings, fishballs, etc, that the server had advertised besides the cooked food, but we were so turned off already by our experience, we lost our appetite and decided not get any. We definitely will not be returning to that place again.

I came here twice at 5pm after work on a weekday. There were nothing left but scraps. Some of the food items were actually packaged in tiny containers for a quick and discounted sale. I left both times without buying anything. Terrible.

UPDATE: The owners now have plastic bowls and stuff that they put the liquidy foods in, which is great. The review below was for that one incident, so don't take it as a review for everything else about this place. The food here is great, especially the dumplings and fish balls. They're even better than kam wai's, i think. And they cook very well, not sticky nor mushy. They make it all there. But do be aware that the prices on the big board are outdated and they are a bit higher.

ORIGINAL POST: I ordered take out of the beef brisket with turnip and the chef puts it in a tin container with a paper plate on top. All the liquid leaked right out. I come here every week and the lady that usually helps me never puts liquid in this container. I am so disappointed at how this guy has no common sense whatsoever. Who puts liquid in that??!

East Kitchen, located on Victoria Drive in Vancouver, is a popular Chinese restaurant known for its variety of dishes and affordable prices. The restaurant offers delicious fast food Chinese dishes. I personally like their BBQ meats, eggplant dishes, and freshly fried fish cakes. It’s set up like Kent’s kitchen where you can buy a combination or items to go.

The prices are affordable. Cash only.
It’s a great place for last minute meals. This place is take out only there is no dining area.

The food at this restaurant is top-notch for the price. You can choose from a wide variety of dishes from pork, chicken, fish, vegetables, and even fish balls. Everything is well-seasoned, unlike some nearby restaurant (same concept but with better parking) that rely heavily on MSG.

It’s surprising that this place isn’t busier. It might be because it's located right in front of a bus stop, which makes parking out front a bit tricky. However, they do have parking available in the back, a detail many customers may not be aware of.

Also, the lady at the counter is friendly, which adds to the overall positive experience.

Just remember the meat balls covered with fish paste. Never disappoint & hot & sour soup is great!!! The staff will recommend daily freshly cooked dishes. Just ask first. But if you expect high end Chinese food then probably go to Richmond fancy restaurants which could cost a fortune.

Bought a 2 item take out box with rice. The braised beef was not overly salty yet still had flavor and tender, fish was good. Great value. They also had freshly fried fish ball which had good mouth feel. The lady serving was nice.

I ordered the 3-items lunch box for less than $10! The chickens and vegetable are fresh. My take-out came with a regular take-out box. If I am in the neighbourhood again, I will definitely come by.

Authentic , yet delicious home cooked dishes with no msg. However, its take out box is extremely shallow. Single scoop depending on item purchased. Definitely not getting the bang for your after-tax dollars :(
