Juan's Place has been proudly serving the Berkeley community since 1972, and being a customer for about 30 years makes the connection to this iconic spot even more meaningful. The restaurant’s remarkable history is rooted in a commitment to authentic Mexican cuisine and a welcoming, family-run atmosphere that has drawn generations of locals, Cal students, and visitors for over five decades.
Having been a loyal patron for around 30 years, it’s clear how special Juan’s Place is—a true staple where the flavors and traditions of Mexico are celebrated with every meal, continuing a legacy that began more than 50 years ago.

Had the mole enchiladas. They were sweet, the sauce was not complex, the asada had gristle. The chips were great, the salsa was thin and didn’t have much going for it. The staff and service was awesome and the local vibe was terrific. The price was just as high as some really great food around town.

I came here because of my name and the name of my grandpa. I was thoroughly disappointed by the customer service. They gave us the wrong order and tried to charge us more without fixing it. They also tried to charge us even more for black beans. Although it was the wrong order, i ate it to be polite but they charged us even more. I will never be coming here again.

classic mexican restaurant with great food and people!
$27.50 out the door for a “full order” of two very dry and small chicken flautas - usually it’s double that.
The staff was very attentive as always.
Clearly, they are struggling because they can’t accept non-cash tips after a card is tapped to pay. I didn’t even know that was possible!

I discovered this place about two years ago, and I’ve been back countless times since. It’s easily my favorite Mexican restaurant in the Bay Area. It reminds me of an old family-run spot I grew up with back in Ohio.
I’ll tell you what, you’ve got to cherish places like this. Once the old man retires or the family lets it go and it ends up under new ownership, it’s just not the same most of the time.
Not saying that’ll happen here, but that’s exactly why it’s worth cherishing a place like this when you find it.

Our favorite Mexican restaurant in Oakland. Absolutely get the flour tortilla chips! This is the place my husband requested for his birthday when we came to visit relatives.
