“El Colmao is one of those increasingly rare Los Angeles restaurants that feels like you stumbled onto a secret nobody bothered to ruin.

It was a favorite of Pulitzer Prize-winning restaurant critic Jonathan Gold, which tells you something. Gold had an extraordinary eye for the soulful, unpretentious restaurants that make Los Angeles such a great food city, and El Colmao is exactly that kind of place.

The Cuban food is terrific. Personally, we always get the pork, the pork ribs, the Caldo Gallego, avocado salad and the plantains, and we have never had a bad meal here.

The staff is wonderful too. Lily and Eddie are especially great, so ask for them if they’re there. They’re warm, attentive, and take great care of you. And then there’s the decor, which I love. El Colmao feels like a perfectly preserved Los Angeles time capsule. It just has character.

“I got the torta cubana and my girlfriend got the Suiza because she’s vegetarian. We both really enjoyed our food. Great experience. Only complaint is that they ONLY ACCEPT CASH. It’s 2026…set up a Venmo/PayPal or something. The atmosphere is nothing to rave about. I was going to give them 4 stars because of the cash issue but my girlfriend really wanted me to give them 5 stars so here we are.“

“The food looked amazing and it was pouring outside so we decided to get the food delivered using door dash.
Unfortunately, it showed up room temperature.
But once we heated it up, it was good enough.
That said, I would definitely pick it up myself next time or going to try inside the restaurant. The taquitos were dried, over fried husks to the point that they had very little flavor. (Like it was under the heat lamp for too long and then cooled down to room temp)
The garlic fries had no initial flavor, but you still get the garlic breath lol. Not sure what happened with that … what makes me wanna give them another chance was The wet pork burrito - probably the best item
Over all., but it also arrived room temperature and needed to be heated. I think it was the beans that were way salty... not sure because I mixed with the rice so I couldn’t quite tell.

All said and done I think the pork was probably hands-down the best part of the meal. We also got a tortia pork sandwich. That we were gonna say for lunch tomorrow.
However, we finished it up… but would say that the bread was not that great, unfortunately.
