The Presidio of Monterey is a active military base that also is the home of the Defense Language Institute. This base sits up on the hilltop and has some of the most spectacular views of the Monterey Bay. The Presidio has a very old history that dates back to the early Spanish settlers and Missionaries that discovered our beautiful state. This base requires visitors to check in at the designated gates with ID, etc. There's definitely plenty of interesting things to see like the Sloat Monument, part of the Berlin wall and a Russian tank from WWll . Many active duty military stationed at the Presidio consider it as paradise.

Love that they preserved all the buildings from early 1900s! Such a quiet serene place in overpopulated Monterey!

The Presidio of Monterey is one of the best military bases in the States. It has some of the most amazing views of the Monterey Bay and it’s just a wonderful well maintained active military base. I had several family members who worked on this base and I was able to spend a lot of time here. I also enjoyed seeing a section of the Berlin Wall and a cool Russian tank from WWll. I was also fortunate to have known some of the amazing former post commanders and command Sargent Majors. The Presidio is most definitely a very special place.

Had a great 2 night stay in the IHG on the Presidio of Monterey as a traveling military retiree and wife. Clean comfortable two room suite, in converted housing. Views of the bay can’t be beat from up high on the hill. Enjoyed the park-like setting with an abundance of deer freely roaming thru as well.

Good community and active military installation. The best views. But they need to hire friendlier gate guards; treat us more humanely. If you don't have the proper ID they are hella rude!

My family was stationed here in the early 80's before shipping off to Stuttgart, W. Germany. We resided in a single family home on the Presidio. It was amazing. When my mom wasn't in class she and I took walks down to the Bay and to Cannery Row. Later in life I honeymooned in Monterey while living in SoCal. Even later, I took my 13 yo daughter on a road trip of fun places. The Presidio was on our list. We loved Monterey and Carmel and 17 Mile Drive. Took her up to Tahoe too. Here's a photo from the early 80's. Great memories!

Attended DLIFLC in 1982 for Spanish. Excellent opportunity to hear and learn a wide range of dialects, even for those who may already be fluent. I had instructors from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Guatemala, and several other countries. Teachers were strict, but thorough. I enjoyed my time at the Presidio!

The absolute best place to be stationed in the military. If you have the opportunity to take a course here, do it.

walking along the deserted streets in the late evening, the presidio enshrouded in thick, swirling mist. in the distance, a booming klaxon on point pinos calls out to fishing boats returning home. the lonely bugle call signals the closing of day. in the morning, the air is filled with the sea lions' barking, marking a new day beginning. i wonder why i always wait to the last minute to memorize today's dialogue. i wonder....

Exchange is lousy. Went to go pick a sweat shirt. Minimal inventory. Waste of time.
