BALEENkitchen is a hidden gem and iconic restaurant tucked away in the King Harbor Marina near The Portofino Hotel. It is a little off the beaten path but definitely worth the trip, offering a nice and quiet area with beautiful views of the harbor and marina. The ambiance has an upscale vibe and is very nice, family friendly, and quiet, making it easy to forget you are minutes from bustling LA.
The menu is modest and well-executed. It is a very good place for brunch, breakfast, and dinner. Specific dishes praised include the pancakes with orange zest, Alex's breakfast burrito, Heuvo Redondos, the Wild Mushroom Flatbread, Noble Garden Chop, Carnitas Tacos, and lobster Mac and cheese. The Sea Bass, prepared a special original way, is described as amazing, tasty, slightly crispy, and moist. However, there can be some good with the bad, as notes mentioned a weak gin martini and a Caesar salad with brown, wilted lettuce.
Service is consistently friendly, professional, and excellent, with staff noted for going above and beyond to accommodate special requests. The overall experience is wonderful and great, with many calling it a must-try. There is sometimes live entertainment, like a roaming guitar player during brunch or Saturday night, which can be enjoyable depending on your preference and proximity.
