First time here w my son who has great memories of his summer in Kenya; in including the food. He said the jerk chicken and other specialties are authentically prepared-the flavors and texture transport him back to that summer.
I’ve had the combo lunch with jerk chicken sweet and spicy with fried sweet plantains-while it was delicious I’ve found the sweet sauce to be too sweet for me. I also couldn’t finish the medium size lunch special because the portions are big.
Very friendly service and staff who were busy with the steady stream of pick up’s of “to go” orders.

It was my first visit to this namely ‘East African Restaurant’ but that’s not the case, poor services indeed & partially burnt food served. Overall good & customer service NOT OKAY!

One of my favorite restaurants in San Diego! I always go for their vegetarian combos. So filling and attractively priced.

We’ve loved this place for years. It’s fantastic for veg folk. Love the mango black tea, (veg) sambusas, masala fries, dengu, nyoyo, biriganya, mukima… honestly just try it all.
I’d say the only drawback is it can be hard to find street parking on a Friday or Saturday night - I hate to think that they lose out on any business because of this!

There food is really good 💯, But The black pregnant lady with a Jamaican accent spoiled my stay at that restaurant .
She is very unprofessional with her service e.g talking rude to us
All me and my boys were really very uncomfortable , I hope she changes thanks
delicious esat african dishes, hearty portions, and great prices. the jerk chicken and fried platains are wonderful, and the service
Not a singularly unique experience for San Diego, but certainly the most accessible one.
Flavors of East Africa has a strong presence at fairs and festivals around town, but their brick and mortar offers a many more option than their festival menus
Curried lamb or goat is my go to. Expect protein/veg/starch and a lot of it for a fair price.
Service is lovely, and the wait staff will help you navigate through the menu like a pro.

Food is okay. I ordered the maandazi and they came out so hard and chewy like almost took my teeth out because I was chewing on them so hard. The maandazi supposed to be very soft and fluffy on the inside, you could’ve google the recipe.
Food was perfect just like I remember. hot, fresh, and savory.

Posting this review for anyone expecting authentic East African food. I really wanted to love this place... I came from out of town and was genuinely excited to try it. Unfortunately, it just didn’t meet expectations for me. The ugali was quite hard and tasted like it may not have been freshly made. The greens were very bland, lacking the flavor. I also tried the chicken curry and jerk chicken, and while they were okay, they didn’t feel like authentic East African dishes. I was really hoping for that familiar taste and this just didn’t quite hit the mark for me. I appreciate the effort and wish them the best, but it wasn’t the experience I was hoping for.

This food is freaking AMAZING and even better as leftovers! I have ordered it twice for catering for my Bunco nights and just had it yesterday at the Adams Ave unplugged street fair And it is so delicious. As a “picky eater” I would’ve never tried this place if it weren’t for my Bunco crew. I am so glad I did. I usually get the sweet and spicy chicken with half and half rice and plantains. Spicy is spicy just a heads up! 😋 Unique and delicious!

I went to SDSU years ago and remember Flavors of East Africa selling at the Farmer's Market. It's been a while but wanted to try it again. We ordered a variety of items. First starting with the Grilled Steak Nyama Choma with a side of Biriganya (eggplant) and Madondo (Kidney Bean Dish). With a quarter of Chapati. We also ordered the Beef Stew with a side of Sukukmawiki (collared greens) and Nyoyo (Corn and Bean Mix) also with a side of Chapati. Separately I ordered Ugali and the 11 oz side of Dengu Curry Lentils. For the meats we enjyoed the Beef Stew over the Grilled Steak. As for the sides we rank it like this best to least favored: Biriganya (eggplant), Madondo (Kidney Bean Dish), Sukukmawiki (collared greens) and Nyoyo (Corn and Bean Mix). Great food and the employee was super chill so great experience here!

The food was delicious... I'd definitely eat here again. I had the spicy jerk chicken with coconut rice. I had some of my friend's chicken curry and I'll probably get that next. The chicken was tender and flavorful. The sambusas were good too. There isn't much parking. Our server was great- we LOVED her. I couldn't decide on what I wanted and she graciously offered me a sample. The ginger drinks were good too. There was a server named Ashley I think- her energy was a bit offputting. She seemed to be barking at the cooks in the back. We were told she was new, so maybe she was stressed??
